I've always dreamt that riot would one day change how they worked lp so it wasn't as simple as win/loss since there are so many afk's and flamers/trollers in the lower elos. I stopped playing solo queue and only play ranked teams because it was such bullshit.
As far as your question goes, ranked is competitive play at all ranks. To say that it is more competitive just because players are better wouldn't make any sense. If you mean, once players get to that level they take it extra seriously, they don't. You will always have AFKs, trolls, and people raging. Idolizing higher ranks is like when kids idolize being an adult. You see it how you want to see it, you don't realize until you are there that it's not as great as you thought it was.
Man you have no idea Plat is an utter shit hole. Worst division in the game by far
