Welcome to the latest installment of Between Two Turrets, a new Q&A series from the NA Community team in which we'll connect you with various Rioters to chat about League, life, and anything in between. You can expect an installment every couple weeks or so, with Rioters from all over jumping in to spend some time with you on the boards.

This week, we've got visual designer and classical vocalist (that's her in the Diana login music) Saiyaka!

EDIT - Alright I'm heading back to work guys, thanks for all the questions! I'll try to check back over the next couple days in case any of you have more questions.

Hi there! I’m Lisa and I’m a Visual Designer. Sometimes I sing, make funny voices and always fail at beatboxing.

I’m a classically trained vocalist, and from time to time have the opportunity to work with the music team on a number of League of Legends pieces like Diana’s theme - Daylight’s End, Orb of Winter from the Pentakill album, The Freljord theme and one of my favorites - Demacia Rising.

As a visual designer, I work on layout, composition and building style guides for the web experiences of everything from the Urfitational to more serious events like Shurima.

My favorite champ is Vayne. I’m currently playing Final Fantasy XIV - Hyperion server :3 I love classical music and good web design. I’m always looking for new music for my daily commute, playing League or just to listen, so send me your favorites~

I keep up with a small music blog and post some of my League and non-League related music projects up on my YouTube channel. Looking forward to chatting about design, travel or random music recommendations!

Lisa, “Saiyaka”

Saiyaka! What has been your favorite project so far during your time at Riot? Is there anything you've been really challenged by?

My favorite project as a Visual Designer would be the Shurima website. There were a lot really new and interesting things we tried and a lot of really great opportunities to stress out the web developer I worked with.

As far as challenges, I'm in a little known ranked team, by the name of Teenage Mutant Ninja Tabi. We've recently entered Bronze 1 - A team best. Everyday is a challenge. However, the biggest challenge is having to explain why the name is just HILARIOUS. I mean... come on... It's like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it's Ninja Tabi, which is an item in the game - a premium play on words.

Your singing on Diana's theme was so beautiful! Did you get to write the lyrics?

Will you have other opportunities to create more login themes?

Thanks!~

The lyrics were written by another Rioter - Devon Giehl "RiotRunaan" I believe. They are amazingly well written.

I'm always excited to have a reason to do music things, so if there are opportunities the music team sees, like the backing vocals I did for things like Demacia Rising or even the Nami recall I'm always interested~

Hey Saiyaka! (loved your singing in Diana's theme!! <3) Just wanted to know just a couple of things, like have you worked on other projects outside of Riot, and if so how was your experience with them?

And seeing as Vayne is your fave champ, have you ever asked or given input on wanting to create a song/theme for her, perhaps for a Halloween event of some kind?

I don't know if anyone else has already commented about this, but will there be an opportunity in the future to have old login screens that we liked?

Besides classical, what other genres of music do you like to listen to?

RiotSaiyaka3 votes

I listen to a ton of soundtrack music from games, movies, anime... Yuki Kaijura and her work for Xenosaga III is one of my favorites. Final Fantasy VI was really memorable too.

I have a really long commute, so I'm looking for something to remedy the boredom - Listening to Freezepop and a variety of Jpop, but looking for recommendations here~~~

Late Night Alumni is a great band also. I highly recommend them, you will not be disappointed.

have you listened to the fan remixed FFVI album Balance and Ruin? hours and hours of nostalgic gold. if you're a hardcore purist, though, these remixes may not be for you. the Impresario (the opera scene) is one of my favorites.

Balance and Ruin was amazing! The Impresario is near and dear to my heart. The detail even in the opera scene - one of my favorite games. Even Celes doing Maria's aria was surprisingly well structured.

Eden of the East. I don't even know why, I just loved a lot about it. The art book is also fantastic.

If you like action shows, Kill la Kill was super fun.

I just finished Your Lie in April and it's has a lot of really good classical music in it :3

Greetings, Saiyaka

My question is: What brought you in to LoL and how long have you been with Riot Gaming as a visual designer (or with Riot in general)?

P.S. Sorry about my vulgar name. When I get enough IP, I will change my name to something better.

RiotSaiyaka3 votes

Hi!

I started playing League to keep in touch with some friends from when I lived in Minnesota~ The friends I was playing with eventually moved out to LA and for a little while I basically lived in a gaming house, lol. Without them I never would have applied :O

I've been a visual designer at Riot Games for almost 4yrs. (wow!) I think I was visual designer number 3 and now it's a team of all types of designers from interaction and UI to illustration!

what was your favorite non-Riot project?

Every once in a while I will do vocals for a friend's industrial band, Gentleman Junkie. I loved doing a different style of vocals and getting out of my comfort zone a tiny bit for a remix of one of their original songs!

https://youtu.be/VofGN_9GnME

The remix on my channel isn't the final - their album, "From the Moment that I saw You" just released recently, so the final mix ended up on there. ^_^

Hi Lisa, I absolutely love your voice Diana’s theme - Daylight’s End. It's shows how talented you and everyone at Riot is!! This song is probably the single most influence to picking up Diana, and her being my main ever since. As this is one of the few, if only?, theme songs with lyrics have you been asked to sing on other projects? Is there any plans to include lyrics to other themes/songs with in the game.

RiotSaiyaka5 votes

Wow! It's really amazing how music can be such a strong motivator :D

I've sang on a few other projects, like Demacia Rising, Orb of Winter, but nothing else with lyrics. The music team is really good about choosing music to fit each specific champion, like Jinx and Vi. Lyrics add a new dimension to a song, but it has to work for the character in the end.

You mentioned you're playing ff XIV atm. Have you played any of the other final fantasy games? If so which is your favorite? Mine is XII, a lot of people hated it item 3070 but god i had so much fun with it!

RiotSaiyaka3 votes

I played FFXII right after a 7 year dance with FFXI Online... so, the gameplay was too similar, which is why I stopped playing it.

FFVI is my favorite, because all the characters were fantastic and the music had really strong melodies. The story also tackled some pretty serious concepts that would be difficult to pull off in modern games... I really like character stories and FFVI had a surprising amount of character development :)

What's your greatest League cheese combination (ie Rammus with Zhonyas)?

You love classical music and your music blog has an article on Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso/Your Lie in April, which includes music from amazing composers like Debussy, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff (Rachmaninov? Still have no idea which one is correct). Who's your favorite classical composer?

We all know "One does not simply have a favorite song." So, what is your go-to song that you have been listening to recently?

Ever heard of the song, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto? (´ ｡•ω•｡)っ⌒♡｡．

Hm... I'm not great at cheese, but back before I understood how items actually worked I built item 3157 + item 3026 on Morgana and thought I was the smartest because I was invincible...

I'm a really big fan of Russian Romantic composers. Dmitri Shostakovich is one of my favorites. Due to some really extreme circumstances people basically branded him a pop music sellout.

Recently - hmmmm... since I've been racing through the expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, I've been listening to a lot of Soken's music he composed for the game. The Heavansward theme, Dragonson is g o r g e o u s . . . !

https://youtu.be/FtuwltmTp9I

Thanks for the song :) I have a soundtrack playlist on Spotify, this will make a fine addition.

A rioter whos loves dragonsong?!?! How did I miss this chance to post here. And

Between this and the diana thing, you're so my favorite rioter besides Ironstylus that is.

I just finished Your Lie in April and it's has a lot of really good classical music in it :3

7 year dance with FFXI Online..

Actually maybe you're just my favorite now, especially if you reply to this so late.

On the off chance you see this or decide to reply, since all the primals have great themes, imo; whats' your favorite Primal theme from XIV?

Mine was Ramuh until Heavansward, now I'd say it's Bismark's; especially the final phase song.

Since you played XI for so long what class did you mostly play? (I am dragoon in XIV & was in XI).

Since you asked for music my favorite track from XI hopefully you had it heard it before though ^^; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ6Es1h8W0g

And final thing have you attended "distant worlds" or at least heard of it?; It's orchestral performance of FF songs live, I traveled to see it about 2 yrs back, and it was awesome and so worth the travel. One of the albums from it below, including "Answers" from XIV at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRKU5iW89NQ

RiotSaiyaka2 votes

I liked the Shiva song a lot, which is basically the whole reason I farmed for the Shiva pony! Unfortunately she doesn't fly... Bismark's theme is fantastic, but I think I like Ravana out of the two new primals, because it's all about that bass :P

CoP had some great music :) Sarutabaruta theme is like the most nostalgic song on the face of the planet for meeeee~

I've never been to Distant Worlds, but I've heard a lot of good things and have all the albums, lol. One day I'll make it to a performance. Especially since the 3rd album has Answers on it! <3

visual designer? Mind telling us some of the proyects you have worked on? What has been your favorite one? P.D. I loved your voice in the Diana login <3 it still gives me goosebumps

RiotSaiyaka3 votes

I worked primarily on events like Snowdown, Harrowing, but also the faction/story events like Freljord and Shurima. I recently joined the skins team, and am really excited to work on fun ways we can present all their amazing work to the world :)

Shurima was definitely my favorite, but fun fact: Pulsefire Ezreal's reveal website was the first website I ever designed, so I am a tiny bit partial :3

teaph1 votes

What's your favourite support to complement your Vayne? ^^

Random music recommendation: Zoe Keating for wonderfully layered cello music.

RiotSaiyaka3 votes

Oh, this cello music is great!~

I love Nami. She can toss out her heal when I go in to poke, making trades so much easier, and then the buff is great too. And the hard CC is great, because my positioning is awful.
