My friend is obsessed with an item

A while back, I showed my friend an item . Ever since, he has been getting it on every champion he plays, instead of getting any other starting items such as the Doran's ones. How do i get him to realize that isn't always the best option.

Tell him that if his opponent pokes a lot and/or your champ is mana reliant (to sustain) to take it. Otherwise, start a doran item depending...

Tell him that sometimes damage is better than sustain in certain matchups
