Custom Skins?

So one of my friends got their main banned for using a voice pack and ever since I've been scared to touch custom skins and (obviously) voice packs since his ban said it was given because he altered the game files. I've been seeing youtubers and some popular streamers using custom skins and I just wanna double check to make sure that I cant be screwed over on this one. Halp
