New Leaverbuster system: Riot's Matchmaking system falls.

So, i'm going to take a wild guess that all the people who got dc'd from games because your servers just crashed will be getting the new leaverbuster priority ques? Cuz Riot's servers are totally stable, it's the people in the game's fault correct? Or is that just your mentality?

So I'm going to take a wild guess that you make a lot of assumptions in your life instead of waiting to see if that's the case or not. Is that just your mentality?

Well when they release a post saying that if a player dc's from a game it's more then likely their fault, what are we supposed to think when tons of people get dc'd at the same time?

Whenever the servers are having major issues (basically any time that Ranked is down or there is a "we're doing maintenance" or "we're investigating a problem" notice up) they disable LeaverBuster.

People seem completely oblivious to the fact that LeaverBuster has been live for like two years.

That only happens AFTER loss forgiven is turned on. Typically several hundred games end before that point.

It's likely they have the ability to go back and "forgive" those disconnects retroactively.

Even if they have the ability, I sincerely doubt they'd do it. Do you know how many man-hours that'd take for virtually no benefit? They've made their message clear: leave a game, you're leaver scum - regardless of who is at fault for you leaving. Even if it's them.

I hear they have these things called "computers" and "databases" over at Riot now.

The scrubbing would; still need to be done manually... either that or they'd need to design a program to do it but even then it'd need to be manually screened since the computers don't know when the issue started, they'd have to estimate manually and go screening for people who got leaves during that time.

Computers are great, but there ARE things they can't do without human assistance or complex programming that'd take just as much time as doing it manually.

This program is called a "database". They've existed for about 50 years in various forms. I'm pretty sure Riot keeps their data in one. (Probably more than one.)

SELECT * FROM Games WHERE <Game.EndTime less than 6 hours ago> AND <a player in the game was flagged by LeaverBuster> <remove all those AFKs from the database>

Or maybe something like:

SELECT * FROM Players WHERE <player got flagged by LeaverBuster today> <remove all those AFKs from the database>

Done.

If you want to get real fancy you script it to happen automatically when Loss Prevention is turned on. Not hard.

I'm not going to argue this, because I doubt their data is quite that simple or, judging by what I've read some of their programmers say about their backend, easily worked with... and neither of us have access to it so our arguments will quickly become childish.

But the real point is that you're assuming they KNOW when the issue started, that they actually care enough to track it. If they did they'd be able to apply loss forgiven retroactively. I don't think they know exactly, and since they wouldn't want any false negatives(judging by the strictness of the system) I doubt they'd guess.

Judging by this system's stated objectives - to punish ANYONE who leaves a game regardless of cause - I simply think they'll see all those people being punished as 'working as intended' and not worry about it, honestly.

...since they wouldn't want any false negatives...

Riot has always leaned way in favor of avoiding false positives in their behavior systems.

Judging by this system's stated objectives - to punish ANYONE who leaves a game regardless of cause...

This is not their "stated objective" with LeaverBuster. Now you're just making things up.

I could point out how there have not been massive numbers of people getting improperly banned at other times when Riot's servers were freaking out -- like when they were getting repeatedly DDOSed over the summer, for instance -- but I get the feeling you're not really looking for a discussion.

You're right, I misspoke, it wasn't their stated objective, it was just a result they're perfectly content with.

And I suppose you're right as well on the false positive count. But Riot no longer thinks there is such a thing as a false positive with the new leaverbuster. The only possible false positive is if someone gets banned without ever exiting a game for any reason at all. So there likely won't be any false positives because their definition of false positive is no longer one I can agree with. For me a false positive would be anyone getting punished who did nothing wrong, for them that's just working as intended and that's where my main disagreement lies.

But as to your latter point... the old leaverbuster was DRAMATICALLY less strict. So no, there weren't 'massive numbers of improper bans' because there simply weren't enough disconnects during that for people to get banned. Although there were a few people. But now, with SINGLE INSTANCES being enough to warrant bans... there will be lots of people getting banned the next time they have an issue like that, you can be sure.
