How Does a Company Making $3Million/Day Fail So Often?!

neverknew··3 votes·660 views

Seriously? i had almost the exact same issue like 10 months ago when I first started playing... and that's why I took a leave of absence from this game until recently... This might be the reason I stop altogether...

Can't Login, followed all "fix-it" steps, ran multiple tracerts to help support team, still no changes.

Seriously?! Off of your[tencent's] 400 million cost to own 93% of riot games... this game makes you 1.5 billion dollars annually, how are you having a fail day THIS OFTEN!? Do you realize that you make OVER 3 Million Dollars EVERY DAY... (on top of owning Riot Games for free...). It's simple math for those of you out there... (1.5 annually - 400 million to buy riot games = 1.1 billion / 365 days = $3,013,698.63 per day...)

Not to mention all of the sufferers that genuinely tried to help by providing tracerts and feedback wont get anything out of your fail. Why should we continue to support something that CARES SO LITTLE FOR ITS USERS!?

Because they are a very new company, are coming into their own, and are entitled to make mistakes. Same things happen with companies like Blizzard and Valve, who have 20+ years of experience in this industry.

This is a legit reason, Blizzard shut down: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/227336-blizzard-claims-it-shut-down-classic-world-of-warcraft-server-to-protect-its-intellectual-property

This, not so much: http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/07/16/riot-suspends-league-of-legends-ranked-games-in-the-wake-of-massive-recall-bug/#713b23903a84

implying blizzard has only shut down once, or made a mistake once

Also that WOW link is saying they shut down an illegally run third party server. Its not even relevant to the topic...

Then there should've been a pre-release for beta's to pre-test this software.

I'm a webmaster- It's not that hard to pre-test.... There's plenty of money, so we know that's not the issue.

They do beta it out via the PBE. Bugs will always fall through and unless it's a P1 show stopper it is on the back burner especially for the most played video game in the world. It's not like this is a standalone, hit run and never look at it again software, it changes every week.

Company I worked for just sold to dell for 60B and the build breaks multiple times a day and there's a bug backlog of like 300k. Money doesn't fix what is guarantee to happen.

I mean, money should directly impact the quality of software to an extent, but I'm glad someone here understands. Scaling software this size is so new in the last few years, and Riots a fairly young company. Software is going to have growing pains.

Money = Time. One way or another. Hire more people to test and pre-launch then, host similar privately run servers to test.

I would rather they made $2.5M a day and hire another 3500 people at $18/hr, 40hrs/wk to test the s*** out of it....

or at least the people that had a problem: giving 500000 people $1 worth of goods for free.... either way these are just digital goods, its not like they lose any money giving freebies away.

You realize how inflated these numbers are you're just throwing around? You aren't even taking into account new management (who is going to manage these new people?), human resources overhead (time to hire, paperwork, travel expenses for interviews, etc), training programs so that the new employees are effective, time to get up to speed, taxes, insurances, physical space, equipment for these new people, and hundreds of other various costs. Also the logistics of testing every ISP from every location just domestically in the USA? Yikes.

All I can read is "gimmie gimmie gimmie" in your last sentence.

Yes, I do realize. but come on. you can definitely have a team of 500-1000 EXTREMELY sophisticated people each Very focused on one specific unit, paid a helluva lot with that same money.

Fine- Skip the freebies. This is about the principle.

Sure, and I'm sure they catch a lot of things you and myself will never see.

Fortunately for us this isn't the aerospace industry where a planes software/hardware is quality assured for over 20 years just to produce a plane and make sure its up to code. I'd also like to add, planes still have issues even after 20 years of labor intensive testing.

Luckily Riot treats this like a game. They have to try and produce the fastest turn around cycle with the best results. Bugs are going to slip through, but again you aren't waiting 20 years for an end product to get that high end stability.

seems like everything that catches greed fever dies shortly after... I would like to keep playing, but its a matter of principle.

Think about this: If I were to treat this game like a sport(as many people do), would football every make me feel cheated like this? If so, there is a person in place that I would be able to talk to. Who is the Commissioner for online games? How do we appoint someone to govern them properly? This is a company making a new "sport"(hello espn...)

Maybe we compare these MMO's by how often people have to use support, and the supports' follow-through... idk... but something has to be done.
