Is elo thrown out the window in norms?

I'm a bronze player and have been all of my time playing league and was never really interested in ranked. Here lately i've been getting into games with gold players?!? i can understand silver and such but i think that this is a little much. It happens every-other game and is getting sort of annoying. Am i being a whiny little bronze player or is this happening to other people as well?

There is MMR (elo) in Normals and the other matchmade modes, but it is separate from Ranked; you can be Bronze in Ranked and have a Diamond equivalent MMR in Normals, or vice versa.

Normal and Ranked Queues have separate MMRs (which are used for matchmaking).

yes elo is thrown out the window in norms. in norms there is a slightly hidden stat called mmr. that is literally all i know as i said slightly hidden, apparently just enough for me not to care

I don't think Riot cares too much about the ratings in normal/blind picks. I've seen ranges from silver to master in a single game.

As long as the 'team mmr' is roughly equivalent I guess.

I normally play with plat through challengers players and I'm gold I even played against the rank 3 challenger in na and went 0/9 while trying karma

There are seperate ratings for each queue, but that is not the problem. The range allowed in norms is a lot looser than ranked.
