Minion Waves.

Hey! Can someone please explain to me about farming minions, and by that I mean the following thing. Supposed that I kill somebody in lane.. what is the right thing to do with the minions? Push the wave, let it as it be? It might be a silly example I know.. but sure there are some rules you need to follow in order to have a good laning phase in other situations.
