Confusion about ranked

Hey guys so I've played league for a while now but I still haven't quite figured out how Ranked system works. I am currently in silver but have a few questions.

  1. What is elo and what effects it? and can I find out my elo?
  2. Do you only go up in ranked if you win? because I have games where I go super positive yet we still lose and it doesn't really seem like its an actual solo queue if my team sucks and we lose and I get effected because of it.
  3. Is it possible to go down in ranked?
  4. What is the best way to go up?
  5. How do you get to different tiers?? i.e (gold, platinum, etc.)

  1. ELO actually is the old system it is now a term that is basically slang for MMR which is Match Making Ratio winning and losing games effects your MMR if you beat teams that have a higher MMR than your teams you gain more MMR if you lose to them you don't lose as much and vice versa if you have a Higher MMR than the enemy (lose more for losing and win not as much for winning). You can tell which team has higher and lower MMR by which side of the map you are on Blue Side has the lower MMR and Red Side has the higher.

  2. To rank up you must Gain LP if you MMR is normal or above average you will gain more LP than you lose in ranked games vice versa for low MMR (note: this is comparable to your rank not in general). Once you reach 100 LP you will be put in a best of 3s (divisions 5-2) or a best of 5s (division 1) where you need to win the majority of your games inorder to go to the next division or tier.

  3. It is possible to be ranked down by multiple ways. If you are in ranked divisions 4-1 simply losing games at 0 LP around 4 or 5 times could result in a demotion (this also depends on how high your MMR should be for that rank). If you are division 5 in any rank your MMR must drop a full tier (ex: Silver 5 to be demoted to Bronze 1 your MMR needs to be at a Bronze 5 level) but this is nearly impossible to do. If you have just been promoted you have some safety games so you can not be demoted (not sure how many I assume 2 or 3).

  4. The best way to go up is simply have a 51% winrate. You WILL rank no matter what if you maintain a 51% winrate.

  5. Look at answer 2.

If you need someone to help work on your mechanics and ways to climb to the ranked ladder feel free to add me ingame and I can help you with what you need work on (It appears you could use help since you are sporting a 38% ranked winrate). Note: I am only Gold 4 so if like someone better than me comes along and offers for help you should take their advice. I have been in Bronze and Silver so I know the struggles though.

  1. Elo used to be the old rank system where players were assigned a numerical value to determine rank.
  2. Yes.
  3. You can only go down tier if you are plat and above. For divisions, you can go down if you lose enough games at 0 lp.
  4. Main a role. Be positive. Never give up. Try learning more such as rotations.
  5. Once you are in division 1 and have 100 lp, you play a promotion series where you need to win 3 games out of 5.

Okay, I'm going to adress all of these.

  1. Elo still exists. It is your MMR. They are the same thing but have different names. MMR stands for Match Making Rating by the way, not ratio. Your rating determines the players you are matched with. Winning increases, losing decreases your rating. The "blue/purple side has higher mmr" thing is a myth. There is no official way to get your exact MMR short of contacting riot directly (to which they'd likely just say "naw" ), but Lolking.net is a good place you can look up summoner names and get a general guess via their Lolking score.

  2. While this may come as a surprise, you only get credit for winning by winning. As far as the game is concerned, your KDA does not matter. You can go 30-0 and lose, you can go 0-30 and win. A win is a win. A loss is a loss. Doing well is nice and all, but assuming a good kda means you deserve the win is unfounded, given that's like saying I should win because I killed the most wolf camps. By that I mean the win condition of the game is not kills or Wolf camps done, its destroying the enemy nexus. That's why a huge number of peoples' tips are "don't rage/chat at/with your team." The reason is because the game is about Winning. Whining and fighting with your team literally accomplishes nothing.

  3. Yes, by losing games. If you lose enough to make your MMR drop super low you could eventually drop an entire tier (This is very hard to do.)

  4. Get better. It is the more generalized answer possible. The way you get better is by realizing your mistakes and when someone outplayed you. If you do so, you will eventually reach a point where you outskill your opponents and will gradually rise.

  5. Literally the exact same thing as 4
