my roommates cat is an abomination and jumped up on my desk, knocking a glass of water onto my laptop. it got under the laptop itself, onto the keyboard and then into the charging port - the charger was still plugged in and it shorted out and turned off. it didnt turn on when i tried it, and im letting it dry out for a day or so before i try anything. what are the chances its totally busted, and how much should i expect to drop to get it fixed?

It would be best to open it up and dry it yourself as soon as possible. Keep in mind if you have a warranty there is a chance you could void it but if you don't then open it up ASAP. The sooner you can get it dry the better, but if everything got fried inside when it shorted out it sounds to me like the chances of it working are pretty unlikely. As for how much it would cost it really depends on where you take it, and what they say its going to take to fix it. Depending on the value of it you could be looking at anywhere from $75 or hundreds of dollars. It really is hard to say without seeing it firsthand. Hope I was able to help!

Put it in a box filled with Rice, overnight Chinese midgets will come, attracted by the rice, and fix your Laptop.

in all seriousness you probably busted it by trying to turn it back on when it was still wet, it shorting out prevents further damage, but trying to turn it on when wet... the rice trick could work for a cellphone or small tablet not sure about a whole laptop (the rice soaks up the water, it does not attract chinese midgets)

The real question is, why do you keep drinks near your PC when you know there is a pet around

depending on the damage and what kind of specs you need it may end up being cheaper just to buy a new laptop, I imagine a computer repair place can give you a quote for repair
