Boy Riot I have an idea for you. Why not just cause a loss prevented when the game system detects a dc and afk.? : O GENUIS

That's been suggested many times.

I think so far this http://www.polygon.com/2014/11/7/7176231/blizzard-heroes-of-the-storm-leavers is the best way to deal with leavers as a whole. If only Riot did this it would help so much.

what if people had stuff to do irl? get punished because a family member died?

There's always something like that to fall back on as an excuse, but it can't be used for every single instance. There's plenty of time people just afk for some dumb reason, rage quit, ect. Really doubt the family thing would happen very often, and if it did, it shouldn't affect one game. The system they are doing clearly says "if they do it over and over" it flags them and places them with others that have been flagged.
