An attempt at becomming a psychologically better player

So, firstly let me say that this post is solely about attitude, mostly in ranked ques, and how to behave as a player. Actually Id say its more about trying to improve in that department. I took a year off from LoL, simply because playing it became more of a negative thing that just causes me anquish than what its supposed to be: fun. I told myself I would make a greater effort to be less negative and not let the trolls convert me into one of their own. I seemed to be doing good throughout the placement, toughing thru losing quite a few games to afkers, feeders, and bad plays on my part as well. Throughout all the rage, hatred and flames I came out the other side in Silver V, but more importantly i made it out with thicker skin as well. As I struggle to climb the Silver ladder, quite a few questions arise about my techniques of handling all the trolls in ranked. While I don't tend to outright flame at trolls anymore like I used to, I still get unnerved from continuous berating my trolls, mostly if they are feeding. ( I could care less if they flame and are good) One tactic I employ to relieve myself of my stress onto the troll is by stating out their KDR everytime they die. If they are especially bad, Ill throw in a sarcastic Gj. This has gotton me quite a few reports already, namely for verbal abuse. I was wondering if that is really reportable. Also questions about afking a match. Is it ever acceptable to afk from a match if literally you're the only one with a kill ad everyone else is 0/7 and the enemy is so fed just coming in sight of them means instagibbed. Just wanted your guy's input!

Yeah, harassing your teammates is reportable, and no it's never acceptable to afk. :)

Yes. Verbally harassing people is reportable, even if you don't swear at them or call them derogatory names. Of course, you're -more- likely to be punished and punished worse when you mix bad language in, but if you consistently harass other players with clean language you'll eventually get punished too.

Personally, I just mute-report-move on. I still compliment the muted toxic player with a 'gj' or give them a 'ty' when they make a great play or do something that saves my life.

These aren't people that you need to form any kind of real human relationship with, to be honest. They are just another obstacle in the game. By harassing them in any form at all, you are only adding to the negativity your teammates feel, making them likely to play worse. The toxic player themselves is not going to start playing better just because you're harassing them, if anything they are going to get angrier and rage more, and worst case may deliberately throw the game. Even ragers usually want to win - in fact they often rage -because- they want to win. But if you provoke them into even more rage, they may try to get back at you by throwing the game. Even if they don't throw deliberately.... I've gotten -tons- of kills personally on enemy ragers when they stopped in the middle of a lane to get into some long flamefest. There's just no benefit at all to provoking them, or distracting yourself from your own play to focus on them.

And no, it's not acceptable to afk. It's always reportable and bannable. Ending games with no hope is done with a surrender vote, not an afk.

Ok, then I will take the improving attitude approach. I'm not trying to be abrasive with my responses, but I am trying to be direct.

As I struggle to climb the Silver ladder, quite a few questions arise about my techniques of handling all the trolls in ranked. While I don't tend to outright flame at trolls anymore like I used to, I still get unnerved from continuous berating my trolls, mostly if they are feeding. So to set the tone, this sounds like if someone goes 0/5/0 they must be trolling (as opposed to just having a bad game or just being a kinda poor player (lets be real it's silver 5. This means you play with high bronze and low silver most likely, which is a very large amount of the community. Some players, even at higher levels, just don't know what to do when they are behind and end up feeding. It isn't always because they are trolling. They could just be doing real bad that game, or could be really bad at that position but the position they wanted was taken, etc...).

If someone on your team is doing very poorly you basically have few options (mentality wise) :

  • Either try to build them up by commenting on something they are doing correctly or well.
  • Offer a different plan. Ex. That riven is too fed to lane against. Come gank bot with the jungle so we can take this tower and drag while riven is top.
  • Don't say anything to them.

The first two options can reaffirm the player who is doing poorly as part of the team. It can also show that you are not blaming them or harboring anger towards them and it may help them calm down and refocus. The last option is the "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all." option. Don't rock the boat further.

If the person is for real trolling, meaning they said they are just going to feed or something like that than :

  • Don't say anything. It will just distract you from your game play, won't make the team better, and chances are you won't have any effect on changing the trolls mind. Trolls generally troll because they get reactions. Don't give them the attention.

  • If you cannot listen to the troll in silence, just mute them.

  • Remember, you can always report the player after the game. This is your avenue of retribution against trolls.

However, this is what you typically do :

One tactic I employ to relieve myself of my stress onto the troll is by stating out their KDR everytime they die. If they are especially bad, Ill throw in a sarcastic Gj. This has gotton me quite a few reports already, namely for verbal abuse. I was wondering if that is really reportable.

Yeah, this is definitely reportable. You have basically said if someone is doing poorly you call out how bad they are doing. Let's say you jump into a game, give up first blood, then get killed when you get back by a jungle gank. Then some other lane goes "0/2/0 gj". You can almost here the noob after it. Spamming this crap every death just to make yourself "less stressed" is pretty childish.

If the person is a troll :

  • you are just trolling yourself, welcome to their ranks.

If the person is playing poorly :

  • You are just putting them more on tilt. Which may cause them to play worse, which means they may die easier, then you will troll, then they play worse etc... This is no way is going to help your chances of winning a game. (and if you would rather have someone flame all game but win, then really you just want to win)

Were you ever in a game, and somebody told you "2/9/4 gj n00b why you no uninstall?" and your reaction was "By god I will go 35/9/17, destroy the enemy team, secure all the objectives ALL OF THEM, and prove to this person that I deserve my account!" Doubtful. You probably thought that person was a jerk.

Also questions about afking a match. Is it ever acceptable to afk from a match if literally you're the only one with a kill ad everyone else is 0/7 and the enemy is so fed just coming in sight of them means instagibbed.

I don't really think it's okay to just afk if your team is losing. I have had people say they wanted to afk and the team has said, go for it, we aren't going to report you. But you are expected to be there the whole game when you start one. It is ok to refuse to go out and die though. If you avoid the enemy team at all costs and say "Hey, if I go near them I just blow up. I am not engaging them." Then I don't see an issue with that. There may be a conflict of opinion on the team, but it's fine to have different opinions on what the best strategy is.

Just wanted your guy's input!

The tone is not meant to be abrasive, but you do have to think about how what you say is going to affect your team. If you are intentionally picking on people about their scores or putting them on tilt just to make yourself feel less stressed, that isn't okay.
