It's all about MMR.
It depends on your ranking from last year as well as the level of players you and your friend both played with and against. If this is your first time playing ranked, it's all about who you win/lose against more than it is about how many games you won. The same is true for if you're playing your placements as well and played last season, though you'll already have some MMR discrepancies.
If your friend could beat those with a Bronze MMR but lost to those at a Silver MMR, he's most likely going to be placed in High Bronze/Low Silver.
Meanwhile if you played against more people with Silver MMR and won against those Silvers, even if you lose one more game, you'll probably be placed at Silver.
Bronze 2 and silver 5 aren't very far apart so that 1 more game he won could just be that difference. But really your previous rank has a significant impact on where you are placed.
In addition to mmr order of wins makes a difference. The first five count for more push than the last 5 bc it is trying to get you to the range where it can make more precise judgements in the last five games. If you went 3-0 and he went 0-3 the. You ended up 5-5 and 6-4 respectively he probably lost enough rank in the early tanking that the later wins were just bringing it back up, while you gained a bunch and so the later losses might not have brought you below your gains.
There's also clearly something else used to determine placement - a friend did all 10 provisionals duo-ed with another player (also doing provisionals), so all 10 of their results were the same. One placed Silver 5, one placed Silver 3.
