When you give somebody a chat ban all you're really doing is preventing team communication. It's pointless when you can mute people in game if they get on your nerves. So really there is no reason for chat bans at all. good try though i guess.
Jubbinaut4 votesInterestingly, it seems that most of the "team communication" from players with chat restrictions tends to be communicating who sucks and why. Which aren't exactly useful pieces of information.
Besides, the restrictions allow for some amount of communication, which lets them become a useful tool for learning how to use chat effectively.
Additionally, it turns out that most players with chat restrictions (at least in the first wave) actually saw their win-rates increase, which tends to indicate that their form of communication may have actually been holding them back.

cyphris411 votesYep from much history with the support staff. If you defend yourself in way what would be considered acceptable in mutual combat and they report you, you are done. These days that is a 2 week ban not even a chat ban.
Jubbinaut1 votesWhile that's not a source, I won't argue it. However, Riot's policy has always been that retaliation is not acceptable. And toxicity in response to toxicity is certainly that.

However, I've never seen any comment from any Riot support member indicate that most chat restrictions have been issued to players defending themselves. I've actually seen exactly no statistics on that at all.

Notably, the Tribunal clearly instructed players that retaliation was not considered acceptable, and to focus on the player they were judging, not what others said. Riot may be stricter about enforcing that, but it's always been a thing.
And they've always said they'd be stricter than the Tribunal was, so it's not exactly a surprise.
