Demoting

(not exactly sure which board this would best belong in) Dear Riot,

As I'm sure you know most of us who play League just play for fun. I like to think of it as a pick-up basketball game. We get competitive, we try our best, we work really hard, but we're not expecting to join the big leagues. We just want to have some competitive fun, and thus also play the ranking system in a casual manner.

"If you're just playing casually, why bother playing ranked then?" you ask. Because I like the competitive feel, I've been playing for two years and am familiar with the champions and game play, and I like having a long term goal like the season rewards and ward skins and such, which are excellent incentives for people to attempt the ranked circuit. I understand the grind up to Challenger, Diamond, or Platinum needs to be challenging, but for most of us who are just trying to work our way through Silver I believe the demoting system is FAR too harsh. It's hard enough getting enough LP and working through a promotion series, especially when you can only play a few games a week. It takes me a long time to get up there in the ranks due to time constraints, so when I get demoted from Silver 1 back down to Silver 2 after few months of doing a couple games every day it really dissuades me from playing the game ENTIRELY.

Demoting of course only happens when you lose a few games in a row, but there are many times you can't do anything about the circumstances. There are issues with team mates of course, such as someone having internet trouble, or rage quitting, or trolling, but there are also plenty of people who come in on "smurf" accounts and play against us in the Silver leagues who are much less skilled and experienced. This is also ultimately a team game, so I find it rather backwards that most people feel they need to master a champion that can, "Carry you to Gold/Platinum." When it comes to team mate issues I try to foster good team relations in every game I play to get everyone in a cooperative mood. I try to find out what people prefer to play lane wise and to choose a champion that I'm confident with that combines well with the team, but when things turn south it rarely ever matters. The toxicity of a team can be rough enough to deal with, especially if you're already frustrated 'cause you made a lot of mistakes, now add on top of that a demotion at the end of a horrible game. All it does for me is make me want to turn it off for good, and I think many in the League of Legends community would agree with me. I feel a lot of this negativity, and perhaps even some of the player toxicity, can be deterred by removing demotion from the Silver and Bronze leagues, thus making the penalty for losing in the early stages of ranked play not quite so harsh.

Sincerely, A slightly salted Silver Leaguer

The fact that I've only played 12 solo que ranked games and I got gold 3, is why we don't need a system like you suggested.

I am very happy for the consistency and teamwork that I'm sure you displayed to get yourself placed well early, as well as the good luck you possess for not having unavoidable issues happen. I was also placed into Gold 5 in season three just from my initial 10 games, and made it to Gold last year with fewer games than I have played this season. I was not nearly as experience as I am now, and I can safely say I was in a good groove of consistency and had good fortune in my games in the previous seasons. However, I think it's safe to say that's not most players' experience in ranked play, though I'm fully willing to take criticism and argument on this point. In Silver the current LP system requires plenty of consistency without needing a slap in the face in the form of demotion. Once you get to Gold you should stay there, though demotions in Gold are OK even if a bit too frequent for my liking. It's dumb that many people want to stop playing ranked if they get to Gold 5 for fear of being demoted back to Silver and losing their season rewards. Every time I felt the need to take an extended break from League it was due to demotion, so I believe this would make the game more appealing to players who don't have such consistency and luck, thus also making it even more successful.

So you want people's rank to be the highest rank they have achieved rather than reflect their current play?

I must first mention that I'm only really talking about Silver and Bronze players. After scanning my post again I realize I'd mentioned demotions in Gold as well and I take that back and have edited my argument. Demotion in Gold is of course fine though still a bit too frequently dealt out for my liking, as long as you're not getting demoted back to Silver. It just makes people stop playing ranked when they hit Gold 5, thus no longer really reflecting their current skill level anyways.

Also, saying that someone's current rank reflects their current play is only partially true. I tend to play Support and Tanks the most, so when my team is doing well I average with a 0/3/16 or 4/3/11 KDA with my best champs, but does that mean that's not my true skill level that I go 0/8/10 on another 3 games that we lose due to circumstances I had no control over? There are many games that there's nothing you can do. You get forced into a position you're not good at playing, team mates get angry at each other and someone quits despite your best efforts to calm them, someone disconnects due to loss of internet, not even mentioning someone else on the team just having a bad game and feeds a hyper carry, which happens to the best of us. Unless you're much more well rounded in skill and of high Gold skill level or above there is no possible way to come back from these games, and sometimes even those with high skill level are left with no possibilities.

What ends up happening is the only way to truly find your place ranking wise is through sheer volume of games, and unless you have the time to invest into it you'll never really find your season ranking. This is perfectly normal and should be kept, I've seen people with 500+ ranked games and are still Silver. It's probably where they'll stay, 'cause if you're not consistently good at the game you won't be able to get through the LP system in Silver and Bronze, but that LP system is plenty of deterrence for people in Silver and Bronze, and having demotions on top of that just dissuades the newer players from playing entirely.

I'm not good at debating, I disagree with what you're saying though. You're basically suggesting Riot to spoon feed players.

Like how some coaches/parents/organisations do with kids in sports. "No matter the outcome every game ends in a tie, so nobody feels bad" and that's a foolish idea to me.

I think a better way to look at it would be thinking of getting to Gold as more of a test of persistence and dedication, and any further advancement being true competition. Like in long distance or mud running, just because you show a group of competitors appreciation for achieving a certain level of skill and determination, such as the Trifecta for Spartan races, that doesn't degrade the ability of the people who are training to compete the Marathon in the Olympics.

Perhaps it's just my misconception of Gold season rewards. I've never thought Gold level season rewards were supposed to be for serious players, just people who want a goal in their ranked play. Not everyone is trying to get to Diamond and Challenger, and while I understand your concern, I disagree with the thought that just removing the demotion of divisions in Silver and Bronze levels could be called spoon feeding players. The LP system is still a tedious system to grind through. You still have to win 7-8 games in a row to go up a division, and every loss means you need to win 2 games in a row to continue progression. Most people have 45% +-5% win rate, the best player I personally know is Platinum and has 51%, and that's still a plenty slow grind without demotion demoralizing newer players from playing at all.
