Do I just give up all faith in you guys?

I have a friend who has been permanently banned, despite having almost literally never typed in games, being low level and having only played for about two weeks. The email she received told her she was being temporarily suspended until last month, before she even made the account, and did not give a reason for the ban. Now this is not a complaint or anything. I just need to know this. Is it possible for an account to bug, or an account to be banned accidentally somehow, or do i really have to completely and utterly give up all hope that Riot Games has any semblance of competence? Because this is a new player who has never even yelled at anyone in game yet, even when they were being infuriating, and I encounter the most toxic people on the face of the planet every single day in solo que, who never get so much as a warning.

Submit a support ticket. If really nothing happened, it's possible there was a bug and I'm sure someone will be happy to help you sort it out.

or maybe they were so bad as a player, that every game, everyone reported her. so many reports is probably gonna turn into a ban..

shame on people for reporting a new player trying to learn the game... -_-

As far as I know you cant be permabaned for unskilled, so how would that make any sense? she was never even given a warning, just randomly got banned for no apparent reason. Literally, the email wouldn't even tell her WHY

hmm, good point... i suggest a ticket... talk with a riot employee to find out what caused this ban..

She already did. that isnt what this is about. I just need to know, as someone who loves this game so much, this is the most disheartening thing I've heard in a long time. If it's actually possible that a person who has never been even remotely toxic, never done anything reportable other then being bad, as all new players inevitably are, to be permanently banned without warning, then as a reasonable adult human being there just is no way I can retain any respect for the people who run this game. Considering how much time i spend on this game... it matters to me, even thought it probably shouldnt.

If they never said anything - how else could they be banned? 1. AFK 2. Boosting. AFK would've come with a warning, boosting would've been an instant ban without possibility of dispute as they typically have strong evidence for proof of guilt.

every perma is accompanied by a little writeup that asks you to contact support. if you are perma banned without being a rager who throws around racist and homophobic slurs, there are 2 other options:

It's a billing related issue, like a charge-back or something (leads to perma until the issue is resolved)
She bought or shared the account (in that case say bye bye to the account, because ToS violation 2 stronk)

It was an accusation of cheating, was the reason they gave. Probably I'll put another post in a few other forums later about this, but I'll start here, because people need to know. This person is my roommate, I know for a fact she wasnt cheating. The fact that she wasnt means riot could not possibly have had any proof, any real evidence to give them reason to ban an account. Riot games is in the habit of banning people on suspicion alone, without proof, without even so much as a decent amount of evidence. This company is pathetic at what they do, and couldnt care less about its players, about us. This I have seen with my own eyes, I, unlike them, have proof. It's undeniable now that Riot Games deserves no respect from anyone.

Nothing specific? Just... "cheating"? That seems unlikely. I've spoken with one of the Player Behavior team who specializes in handling those kinds of complex issues, and she was pretty clear that they always explain at least the form of "cheating," whether it's using banned 3rd-party software or modifying the game client (or whatever else it may be).

That's not to say they simply present all their evidence - that would be dumb, as it would simply allow those who do cheat in these ways to learn how to avoid detection in the future.

I sincerely doubt that. It takes a great deal of research and preparation before they actually go through with bans like this, because they are aware of the potential harm. One of the PB team's primary goals is to minimize false positives - something they've done a consistently solid job of so far.

I strongly suspect that there's something going on here that either you don't know about, or you aren't sharing.

A great deal of research and preparation? She started playing less then two weeks ago. And no matter what, any evidence for a crime which was never actually committed cannot reasonably be sufficient to warrant this kind of response. I'm really sorry if this incident disappoints you, it disappoints me too. But this is not about anger, what anyone feels is not what's important here. What matters is that Riot is banning accounts without proof, without good evidence and most importantly, without possibility of dispute. This is something the community at large needs to know, that before making the decision to spend money on this game they have to consider the very real possibility that Riot may decide to take what you bought away, and that there is nothing you, as a player, can do about it.

You say this without any knowledge of what the crime actually was. "Cheating," as I said, is extremely vague - and not a typical Riot answer.

I am in no way disappointed. Nor am I angry. I have no stake in this, in any sense. I honestly have no idea what I may have said that would lead you to believe that I felt anything about it.

What matters is that Riot is banning accounts without proof, without good evidence and most importantly, without possibility of dispute.

Again, I hope you'll forgive my skepticism regarding this. It flies directly in the face of everything I have seen or heard regarding their banning practices over the past two years. And, to be blunt, you haven't done a very convincing job of supporting your position.

This is something the community at large needs to know, that before making the decision to spend money on this game they have to consider the very real possibility that Riot may decide to take what you bought away, and that there is nothing you, as a player, can do about it.

I should hope they do know that. It's plainly visible in the Terms of Use. Part III, section E states:

"RIOT GAMES RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SUSPEND, TERMINATE, MODIFY OR DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON OR NO REASON, WITH OR WITHOUT NOTICE TO YOU, AND WITH NO LIABILITY OF ANY KIND TO YOU. Additionally, Riot Games may stop offering and/or supporting the Game at any time. For purposes of explanation and not limitation, most Account suspensions, terminations and/or deletions are the result of violation of this Agreement, the EULA, the Privacy Policy, or the Summoner’s Code (defined below). Accounts terminated by Riot Games shall not be reinstated under any conditions whatsoever."

However, as I've stated, this is not how Riot usually handles these things - there's simply no benefit to it. Which strongly indicates to me that there's more to the story.

I do have a specific question, however. You indicated that the month she was banned until was before she created the account, but what year was that ban supposed to be until?
