Discussion about the term "mana"...

So I have a serious problem with the term "mana." Adopting a masculine prefix to an imaginary term is really toxic and problematic. I know a lot of you are going to be really hurtful and mean, but the term "man" in something like this CAN trigger people. I want other proud Wymyn like myself to stand with me and see if we can get this disgusting display of patriarchal nonsense changed for the greater good of wymyms league players!

I'm not one to bring up problems without solutions so here are some non-problematic alternatives! :) -Womana -Xerna -Xeana -Or just plan Ana! xD

I completely agree. In a patriarchal society where everything is man this, or man that this term is extremely problematic. Internal misogyny is a HUGE problem in popular culture today especially in the video game industry. Worst part is they aren't even trying to be womyn hating pigs :/ They just are. Well I for one will be using the term womana from now on to empower other womyn gamers in a society that does nothing but beat them down.

Here's the deal, I don't give a fuck about your gender, your're race, or any other insignificant thing about your personal life in games, what I do care about in games such as league of legends, is performance, essentially, do you suck? And Mana comes from Latin based languages, where the "a" sound at the end is feminine

According to Google and Wikipedia, it actually roots from a Maori word meaning "Power, prestige; specifically, a form of supernatural energy in Polynesian religion that inheres in things or people."

Alternately, it may root from the word "mina," which itself comes from the Hindi word "maina."

But, considering the meaning of the word as we use it today, it's most likely Maori.

Other than that, I can't really disagree with you.

EDIT: Additional note: I did not realize until checking that definition that "inherent" had a verb form. I have learned a delightful new thing today.

Y'know, I half-suspected something like that. So I took the time to also look up the Maori word for man - specifically the most generalized word I could find for male humans. That word is "Tāne."

But don't let that stop you from continuing to assume that English connections are the only possible connections when referring to a completely separate language. I mean, you're only dismissing and marginalizing an entire culture.

I understand that this is all an act for attention, but. In the event that this mundane bullshit is real, my response follows. At this point, rights under law are fairly straightforward, working towards fully equal, I am not dillusional enough to say that equality is here, because it is not, and it never truly will be. what doesn't help is worthless ideas such as changing words such as Mana... which has nothing to do with the male gender other than similar spelling, but instead of trying to work on the gap in pay between men and women, you bitch on the LoL boards about how an utterly insignificant thing is somehow not PC enough for you. Hmm... I see your point.

However, a simple post on the LOL forums will not be sufficient to successfully stem the tide of the word "mana"; as it pertains to a magical resource in the fantasy setting because the word was invented long, long ago, and made popular by games like D&D.

So what you really need to do is put together a time machine and go back to the year 1974. Then find Gary Gygax, and Dave Arneson and convince them that the term "mana" is sexist, and that they need to change it to "femana" or women will be forced to play games with this abhorrent sexist term for the rest of eternity!

I found a diagram of the "Back to the Future" time machine/Delorean (attached), and it appears that the final piece is invented this year, so you should be able to put this bold plan into action any day now. I think radio shack has flux capacitors on sale for $29.99 right now.

I would help you, but I'm already busy trying to get this rainbow-painted pine cone I found signed by all of the world leaders so we can stop gay oppression once and for all, and then focus on world hunger.
