Love for Riot and the new Shurima lore.

Title basically says it all.

There's a lot of anger and confusion about the lore changes Riot is making but they have been very quick in putting out a brand new lore event. It was my understanding from all of their lore talks that this is the sort of thing they're planning on putting out for us.

It's been very quiet on the lore front for quite some time so I, for one, am very excited about the new Shurima lore. I think you're (Riot) taking the lore in a great new direction and I hope you have more events like this one planned for the future. I think it would be awesome if all of your future champion releases went like this, with new skins, wards, and featured game modes. I think it's a great way to introduce new characters, not only to the players, but to the lore as well!

Furthermore, I know there is probably quite a bit of retconning (major AND minor) to come to our favorite champions in the future. I think this Shurima method of lumping them all together and releasing a big, juicy chunk of story to go with the reworks is a great way to do it. I really, really hope we get to see more reworks like this in the future (and that we don't have to wait too long for them)!

TL;DR New Shurima lore is great and I hope there are more events like this in the future!

Cassiopeia was turned into a lamia by the venom of a snake that SHOULD have killed her, a tomb guardian doesn't just bite people and poison them, it KILLS them and EATS THEM.

The new lore would be great if these were new concepts. However, they're not new concepts. They've been done THOUSANDS of times before. Lores are being changed needlessly and age old cliche's are being placed into effect. I for one REFUSE to accept the new Cassiopeia lore. It's quite stupid and should be reverted.

"Skarner is an evil angry tomb guardian. Nobody knows what he is or why he's there but he's pretty darn ferocious and evil."

"Amumu is a tiny amnesiac zombie who doesn't know why he's there or where he's going"

"Sivir is probably dead."

"Rammus, The Shurimadillo (tm) is an armordillo. Who is he? Where did he come from? Where's he headed? Does he have any character? You figure it out bitches I'm done with my bathroom break"

So juicy. Very satisfying. Great character development.

Wait, youre joking right?

Youve got to be joking. All they did was rewrite a handful of champions lore badly.

Skarner isnt even from the Crystal Scar anymore! Did I mention its only ONE PARAGRAPH LONG? Yeah, everyone whos lore changed is now literally a single paragraph long. Man that must have taken forever to write. Ive lost all faith in riots ability to tell stories at higher than a 6th grade level now.

The only thing that makes this farce of a lore event even close to bearable is the fact that the artists at riot are trying to be talented enough for the writing department as well.

I agree that it's really cool how they are rewriting the lore for some champions and tying them in with the Shurima Desert, but to do so, they completely ruined the lore of each of those characters. Let's just look at Braum: he had a video introduction, a mini-game, AND full in-client lore. Gnar also had a full in-client lore. With Azir's release, they made a video and changed some lore to tie in with his background story.

In the client, however, all of the lores they changed completely destroyed any background story those champions had. Instead of giving us a creative and interesting story for each champion, they just gave a very vague description of how that champion came to be. They removed a full page of history for each champion and gave us very short descriptions. Rammus was hit the hardest. His previous lore didn't answer any questions, but he doesn't have that much of a personality to begin with. Now, all they did was ask the same questions that we have all been wondering. The lore is supposed to answer questions and clarify the character's motives and behaviors, not make us more confused.

I hope they are planning to expand upon the single paragraph they have for each champion. It's kinda sad to see this happen to champions that had a pretty interesting back story (such as Renekton and Nasus). I hope Riot addresses these issues soon and fixes them.

The lore is much worse. Skarner is no longer honorable and intelligent through lore. He's now a mindless guard. Ezreal is embarrassed? His in-game lines don't support someone that's embarrassed for being a "hero" (And, puts on an amulet and just becomes a hero? WUT?). Cass' original lore was actually pretty cliche, but much better than current. Seriously? She's bit by a snake, then becomes a weresnake? Fafuuuuq... Her being cursed by a cursed sword that shouldn't be in the Freljord in the first place, makes more sense. Amumu's lore has been retconned so many times, I'm not surprised he got another one. Nasus is... what exactly...? He a bodyguard for Azir? Is he just a guard? Is he still a librarian? What does he do? Xerath went from a misguided student that wanted to learn about the power of magic, to a Saturday cartoon villain. Rene's is a little odd. Even after getting brainrot from being with Xerath for so long is logical, but it doesn't support why he'd remember only Nasus closing the door. Truly, he would also remember he told his brother to close the door. The original lore made a lot more sense, being corrupted by the evil he was slaying.

Also, about the comic... how the hell you grab hold of a being that's of pure energy? Also, why would Xerath even need Azir to do the ritual...?

Overall, it's worse. I have to disagree with you OP.

I´m quite disappointed:

- I don´t see any reason why this story retcon would have been impossible with the IoW as cannon

  • I can´t really understand Cassios motivation to go there, nor why opening the crypt with the apparently right artifact triggers a curse
  • some of the retcons are just horrible so far (especially skarner, mumu and Ez)

I am really happy with the video, it's been tiresome dealing with all the doom sayers, but now that i fee it's all fine i can feel a bit more at peace,

I'm quite enamored with the new Shurima lore, actually. Both the video and (most of) the redone bios. I think it adds much needed depth to quite a few of them. Especially the fabled blood feud between Nasus and Renekton.

I mean, Renekton* volunteered* to be imprisoned with Xerath, and when the two were finally released by Cassiopia and Sivir, he had been driven mad. He blames Nasus for his awful condition, even though it was he himself who urged his brother to lock him away with the traitor. It's all very tragic, and I love it.

Great damn job, in my opinion. Can't wait to see the other chapters continue to flesh out the story.
