Finding Your First Main

I was talking to Riot Neon about how I got into League, and she asked me to share my story.

I played one game of League of Legends in beta as Karthus, and I absolutely hated the game because it seemed really strange that my autoattacks were super slow, and I had to constantly spam Q to get damage off.

I came back a month before the first season started, and the very first champion I played was Akali because she was free that week. The first three games I played I ended up with about 30 kills a game and had close to 90 kills after 3 games. I loved that she was a snowbally assassin that felt really rewarding to kill other players with and stuck with her as my most played champ that week.

I spent a lot of time using her to level up to 30, before I eventually switched into playing Katarina, another reset champion.

I remember returning to Akali after not playing her for a long time during my first tournament at IPL3. I spent maybe less than a week practicing her, and we had to use a substitute mid laner, so I had to play top lane Akali which was very far from my comfort role. I played against Hotshotgg's Galio top lane and killed him solo while he tried to TP away and won the series and the tournament.

Looking back, it's been a while since i've played her. She's been relatively low priority as one of my picks, but I know one day she'll be back as one of the champions I enjoy playing mainly because her kit is really fun for me to use.

So how about you? How did you find your first main?

Mine was Nami! I fell in love with her when she first came out. Mostly because she is a mermaid, but also because of her kit. She wasn't as powerful as other supports when she first came out, so people weren't always very happy when I picked her. I remember my excitement when she was picked in LCS. Also, when I found out she was getting buffed a few months ago. I was like, see! The power of the mermaid has manifested! #OGNamilover

I was just about to hit thirty and wanted to try jungling, so I decided to pick up Nautilus. He was big, stompy, tanky, and a total bad ass, so I was sold. I began playing as a jungler more and found him to still be fun no matter what I was doing, as he always felt like all his abilities were about keeping people under your boot while being so big and terrifying they couldn't stop you. To this day I've stuck with Naut as my main jungler even though I don't really main any role, just because I still have fun with him.

Ain't no meta gonna tell me when to play or not play Nautilus!

When I first started playing, I started researching champions I think I'd like to play, and immediately fell in love with the idea of Riven. I loved her aesthetic, her attitude, her story, and her kit. I told my friends I would wait until I was better at the game to buy her, and diligently tried to improve by playing whatever was free that week instead.

Around level 10, I logged on one day to receive a gift from a friend: Riven! I was so touched that a friend I had never met in person and only played LoL with got me the champion I had been lusting after. For the next 10 or so levels, I played literally nothing but Riven*. To this day, I get super happy when I see Riven (except when the enemy team plays her, ugh). I even met the friend who bought me Riven at PAX Prime last year!

*Disclaimer: I was probably the worst Riven NA.

My first main was Amumu

He needed a friend. :)

My boyfriend convinced me to play because we were both getting tired of my getting upset that we were wasting time together when he played. He showed me champions he thought I would like and out of them only one was free...

I read up on League, studied the champs, saw Mordekaiser . Immediately installed the game, bought RP, bought Morde and played nothing else for half a year. HUE!

Due to a champ select mix up I had to Shaco top, best mistake of my life. I am a Shaco top main now that used shaco to get out of bronze 5 into silver 3

The first champion I mained was Caitlyn.

I spent a lot of time watching my friends play the game but didn't have a computer to play it myself. The game was so interesting and I liked so many of the characters and the overall dynamic of the game so I ended up using my up and coming tax return to purchase a half decent laptop so I could play too. A bit before that, my friends were looking at the next new champion coming out, explaining to me how they put out new characters to play every two weeks (BACK IN MY DAY). That's when I saw her. My beautiful steam-punk princess. The second my laptop arrived I downloaded League, went to GameStop, bought a ten dollar RP card, and bought Caitlyn right when I got home.

Looking back, I didn't realize what a monster I was. I would play Caitlyn mid. Only. I would take ghost/tp for summoners and run/tp all over the map trying to kill anything and everything. I started trap level one and would line their side of the river with three traps so it made it harder for them to CS without stepping in one and taking a head-shot to the face.

I was the worst kind of person.

I don't really play ADC anymore, and it's actually my least favorite roll now, but Caitlyn still holds a place in my heart for being the entire reason I wanted to start playing League in the first place.

EDIT: I KNEW I STILL HAD IT. I took a screenshot of the endgame screen where I got my first penta ever. (With Caitlyn of course) Check out that awesome thornmai and that awesome CS.

SorakaSoraka because my friends forced me to play support when they were teaching me to play. Here I am a year later, still supporting. SOS.

My first time playing League was several years ago, I think season 2. A friend of my older brother was playing it and I thought it looked cool, so I gave it a try.

I found myself really liking Lux, she felt so safe but at the same time she felt like she destroyed all enemies (I played several games with my brother's level 30 friends early on, so me at levels 1-20 was very different from most at levels 1-20). I considered Lux a great bit of fun, the friends had told me her only drawback was I had to land skillshots, which I was surprisingly good at- I was using a touchpad for over a year too.

Malphite

I played World of Warcraft for a long time as a tank, so tanky characters naturally appealed to me when I began playing League about two and a half years ago. My first love was definitely Malphite - his ultimate seemed similar to Heroic Leap from my WoW days, and I loved playing him mid lane and wrecking people as I leveled up :D

Ezreal is my kind of guy. My friend finally convinced me to play League near the end of season 2. He thought I would do well as an ADC but I just didn't get the mechanics, I was constantly focused on my abilities. After 10 games or so, I tried Katarina and had a blast, but still was no good. Around level 15 I tried Ezreal purely for his ult, but found immediately that I enjoyed all of his skill shots a ton. Soon enough I was experimenting with him in the mid lane, and ever since I haven't found anything that can quite compare to his versatile builds and skillshot play style. Even when he's out of meta, I can always find success and a ton of fun with the man with the best dance in the league. And anyone who disagrees belongs in a museum.

I think I'm one of very few whose first main champion was Taric. Before even playing League, I knew that I would like to play support over any other role (and I still do), but I needed a champion that was fairly cheap to level up with. My friends told me to get Taric because he was decent (at the time) and was a fairly low cost. I thought the idea of an on-target stun was super good, so I stuck with him for a while. Ultimately, I came to know that he was outclassed by a few other supports (Thresh, Leona, Janna, and Sona were pretty big at the time). So, I ultimately bought Leona and didn't play Taric much since, though there was always a place in my heart for the Gem Knight.

When Pre-season 4 rolled around, Taric turned out to be practically broken, so I returned to playing him for that whole period of time. Sadly, his ratios were nerfed because of it, and I have seldom played him since Season 4 started. Nevertheless, he remains to be one of my favorite champions of all time to play. One of my favorite things to do nowadays is Taric Top (:

Saw shaco in the store and thought who wouldn't want a sadistic clown as their first champion? Thus my love for shaco was born.

i was playing with friends, drunk as hell on a summer night when i tried sivir during my 1st game (she reminded me of xena so i thought it was kinda cool)

didn't particularly enjoy playing her

game two, anivia was on free week as well, tried her, her W reminded me of protoss sentries forcefields in starcraft 2 and i loved the idea of strategically zoning out the enemy movements during combat

has been my favorite champion ever since (although getting a pentakill on shyvana the first time i played her did make me main shyv for a long time in season 3)

I was a perverted 20-something and saw that Janna wore very little clothing.

Fortunately like 6 years have passed since then and that is no longer the deciding factor in what I choose to play... but... that was the reason back then. lol

Teemo and MasterYi

I kept duo'ing with my friend ( we still duo 2 years after starting league) Was picking Teemo when he was going blitzcrank (nothing more fun than a grab into a shroom) and Yi just for the penta's in bot games...

I was awful when I started, but I was playing with friends that were already pretty good. So I played Ashe and just shot miracle arrows to their lanes for the assist and let them carry me to victories.

Graves. My brothers said I would be a great ad carry and they needed a great ad carry in their team, so that's how I started playing League. I hated it at first but when they actually spent some time explaining the whole team work plays and everything else, my love for League grew. And now I play more League than they do. Graves Graves is love, Graves is life.

I was playing a game with me and my 4 other friends who were also just getting into League, I always loved any characters with stealth aspects to them and I got quite the surprise when a hamster with a hat popped out of thing air and shot me point blank range. I thought I had gotten away with flash but then I saw the poison indicator above my head and then a gray screen. I watched that guy for the rest of the game and he looked incredibly fun when I saw him running faster than both teams and being able to place traps!

After the game I found that Teemo in the Champions Tab and he was an instabuy for me! I enjoyed the roaming and trap placing yordle because he felt like a secert agent infiltrating the enemy jungle. Also his model is so cute! Teemo

I love having this conversation with other league players! Great ice breaker! I played around early and had mixed emotions about the game BUT Darius was my first main! My friends called me the dunk master fresh! Ahhh nostalgia!

Draven was the first champion I bought with RP, and this was when he came out (WE ALL KNOW HOW HE WAS THEN) and I thought he was really fun to play, I ended up maining him throughout season 2 and 4 (with Vayne being my main in season 3 and partially Sivir in 4).

Darani3/11/2015, 10:51:44 PM2 votes

Started back in beta and my first main was Jax because I liked to abuse the dodge stat back then.

Truth be told I had no clue what I was doing even tho I had played plenty of DOTA before starting to play League of Legends.

RiotZwill3/11/2015, 11:00:33 PM2 votes

It's really funny, but I feel like I'm constantly finding my new main :).

Right now, I'm spamming the hell out of Graves in ranked, while I'm trying to learn Corki and Kalista (I just switched to an ADC main from Jungle main).

When I was jungling, I loved playing Udyr though. The first time I kited an entire team across the map with just a sliver of health, I fondly recall shouting at the monitor, "YOU CANNOT STOP MANBEARPIG!" and laughing my ass off the entire time.

Good times ;).

I started playing sometime in season 1, and back then I was a major Guild Wars player. I main character on there was a Warrior I played as a pure tank. Even though that game had the regular MMO trinity I sacrificed what little offense I could have had so that I didn't need to be healed particularly often. It got to the point that my guild's healer started bringing damage.

The first champion I played in League was Cho'Gath, because he looked cool, and I didn't really understand how the game was supposed to work. After that match I went and played the tutorial, and one of the avaliable champions in it had a defensive ability and a passive that healed him. I tried him out, and he just clicked with the mindset I had built up from past games. I've been a Garen main ever since, and I have no intention of ever changing.

SoraAiKin3/11/2015, 11:24:52 PM2 votes

My first main was Leblanc. She was just so much fun to play and the idea of the ultimate made me play her so much. I just played her from lv 10 to lv 30. But as I moved to lv 30 I found so many champions that i wanted to play and even know i want to play like 10 champions because there are so many cool champions in League of Legends. I guess i'll never quit ! :D

Klax002saur3/11/2015, 11:24:55 PM2 votes

Quinn was the first champion i ever actually called my main. I've always had a curiosity of being a hawk tamer and she pretty much is one by default. I also liked the tag team fantasy from her lore. I've stopped playing her lately because her bugs are just way too frustrating, and her auto windup is the worst. I dug out of bronze very quickly with Leona and Amumu though so you could say they were my mains at one point i guess.

Pengod3/11/2015, 11:26:34 PM2 votes

My first main was Poppy. I played her for the first time in the jungle because I saw my friend do it and we all called her a little smurf. I laughed at the idea and decided to try her. I've played her ever since.

Xin Zhao win nhao was my motto when I first started to play league. I learned the ways of the jungle through Xin's spear and eventually graduated into making Evelynn my main. There was always something about being able to sneak into lanes and just lay in wait till they made a mistake or overcommitted against my team's laner. I was so sad once she got nerfed and become nearly impossible to jungle with without dying to the razorbeaks. She has slowly been working her way back into my rotation for jungle though. Might need to get a new keyboard due to the q mashing...
