Quitting the League Community
Hi all,
My boyfriend coerced me in to trying League approximately a year and half ago, and although I was initially sceptical of the success of his endeavour, I ended up falling in love with the game. I quickly reached lvl 30, began my ranked career, and reached silver 2 this season (Unfortunately I have fallen to silver 3 since). I was proud of my achievements, and just generally enjoyed playing, both solo or duo que.
Recently, however, I have noticed a shift in attitude concerning the community. I was always aware of the negativity apparent, and consistently displeased by it, but the issues were few and far between, and I could play a few consecutive games without anyone raging, intentionally feeding, bullying the team, ect. But as of recent, perhaps the span of a month, I feel the community has become absolutely abhorrent. It seems every ranked game I play now has at least one team member who spends more of their time typing nasty insults than playing the game. I'm not sure what would have caused the increase of toxicity, but it something every friend of mine has noticed, thus making me believe it is universal.
Today was the final straw. I played a match with an exceptionally toxic Malphite. I lost one kill early in lane, and he jumped in (he was junlging) and quickly died to the same enemy. Immediately after this he begins yelling at me for "feeding" the enemy top lane. So one death of mine (to an enemy he had also died to) was enough justification this player needed to create animosity between the team. The enemy team ended up winning. And despite this Malphite also making mistakes (a horrible baron call, 2 lost objectives because of bad smite mechanics, getting caught out, ect), he was furious at every member of our team, throwing insults and blame everywhere - aside from himself of course. Did he physically lose us the game? No. It is a team game; we lost together. But for me, the game was lost from his first rage.
Playing consecutively with toxic players such as this has exhausted and disgusted me. I feel like a worse person when I play. I always attempt to quell or resolve the issue when we have an agitated team mate, but their lack of cooperation leads to frustration, which inevitably leads to the desire to call out the immature brat for what they are. I understand the game evokes a level of commitment, and I will admit I have perhaps take a match too seriously. But at the end of the day, I realize it is a game I am playing after work, or on my day off, for entertainment. I am playing it to relax after a long day, or enjoy an evening with my boyfriend.
I am 20-years-old, statistically younger than the average league player, yet I feel like I am consistently playing with entitled children. I will admit I am not completely sure of how the ban/restrictions system works, and I appreciate whatever part of Riot's resources that has been delegated to monitoring the behaviour of their players. But as of current, I do not feel like the repercussions for sustaining a negative environment for players- at least in my ranking- are firm enough. No matter how many players I report, there are countless more waiting to ruin the experience of my next match. Therefore, I have decided to take a break from League; I am no longer enjoying the game. I hope one day I can return and enjoy it as I previously did, but for now, I am removing myself from the grasp of an overbearingly toxic community.
