Toxicity is just a massive domino effect
I wouldn't consider myself any angry person, but I've probably been the maddest I've ever been while playing league, and that is how this entire thing starts. Player #1 has a bad few games in a row and is a little pissed off, and the next game they play, Player #2 makes a simple mistake and Player #1 really lets them know it. Player #2 is now mad and for the rest of the game plays increasingly worse. The next game Player #2 gets into, he flames Player #3 for taking his position during pick phase. Player #2 and Player #3 essentially throw the game because of how angry they are and the rest of their team is now mad. Domino effect where everyone they're mad at just gets mad and they just follow suit. A person is very rarely always toxic, unless they are, in which case they're probably just an asshole, but it's easy to see how one toxic player can just lead to a lot people being toxic. I've had more than a few occasions where someone would flame me and a friend, and then at the end of the game we would just stop playing league for the day because of how mad we are at that last game/person.
This is all under the assumption that people play worse when they're mad, which according to "Riot statistics", is true and honestly, probably is true. I recently uninstalled this game because my tolerance for the people that play this game has just gotten too low; I get a lot angrier a lot faster because at this point, I'm just expecting the toxicity or trolls. This is more than likely going to be a problem forever in this game as Riot has no way to just straight up change human psychology or behavior, and I'm sure a lot of people can just /mute everyone in their game or just know how to deal with it better than I do, but I can't think of a good solution that doesn't make me mad when somebody trolls, feeds, or is just in general toxic.
Just to throw in a few other things I enjoy about this game: (I do actually enjoy this game, just usually not the people that play it)
- Communication: People don't listen, they'll die and then blame you when you clearly either pinged them away from it or let them know in chat that they were headed to their death.
- Feeding: I don't really understand this one, but some people enjoy spending 20-60 minutes of their day trolling and intentionally giving the enemy kills. I understand the difference between someone making a mistake and dying because of it and people intentionally dying, but generally it's very easy to notice if someone is doing it intentionally or not.
- "It's just a game": It's true, League of Legends is just a game, but I didn't join a game so that you could intentionally play poorly because you don't care about the outcome of the game.
- Nobody wants to take the blame: I know when I've messed up even though I won't always admit to it, but a lot of people like to pin the blame for losing a teamfight or just dying in general, on somebody else. That's not a league specific issue, that's human nature, nobody likes pointing out they messed up.
Now, i'm by now means an amazing League of Legends player and I'll be honest, the highest rank I've climbed to is Silver 3, but I don't see myself climbing much higher due to everything I've just written.
tl;dr Toxicity is an issue, but that's just due to the way people behave, and there's no changing that.
