Question about account suspension

I am sorry for those of you who read this already, but my old post got deleted for being posted in the wrong section.

I got 2 weeks suspension on 7/11 due to my verbal abuse. I was checking www.support.riotgames.com and reading "My account is suspended" section, but I see that "offenders will first be placed in a low priority queue. If a player fails to stop, they will result in bans".

Does this mean I was reported several other times earlier? I admit that I cussed and taunted someone during my last game, but that was only because the other guy started it first, and I normally never pick a fight first. I am not sure if this 2 weeks suspension is really the first warning or not, but I never received any warning beforehand until this one.

Also, what are standards of discipline? Like, does Riot look at who start the fight first? or do they count who violates verbal abuses the most? A guy from my last game started cussing and flaming at me first, and I did cuss back. I understand the reason of my ban clearly, but I have a hard time understanding how he gets away from a discipline.

Riot is completely incompetent when it comes to their reform system. Your whole team could be issuing you death threats the entire game and if you say ONE verbally abusive message and get reported they will only pull what you said and issue punishment. They don't care what happened to cause you to get verbal at all. Yeah its a joke.

That is so true.. I am not a high-tempered person, but I am a human being which isn't perfect. I do get angry too when someone cusses at me or pick a fight on me. Even though this was one of very rare time thing, I do know I am punished for a reason, but seeing the guy who actually started a fight continues playing games after all makes me feel very unfairly treated and discriminated.

If you were punished for verbal abuse, it's chat restrictions or suspensions

Thank you for your correction and response. I, now, know that my quote is only effective under "leaving / afk" situation. But what are the categories that differentiate between chat restriction and suspensions? Don't I deserve a chat restriction if this was my first warning?

i received similar disciplinary actions, i had AFK'd in recent games (one ranked then three normals in about a week) but it wasn't until the last normal game that i received any punishment. the weird part is that i was put into low priority que for 20 minutes, the maximum time on my first punishment. does riot now give less but larger punishments? I would really appreciate an explanation for how the punishment system is actually run.

Sorry to hear that you have been punished. But yeah, this is kind of confusing for me. I had reported even worse players (not just cussing at players, but also at their parents and families), but they seem to be just fine and continue playing games. I felt a little that Riot sometimes does not hear players' side of stories and just jump to a conclusion.

Reports probable built up over time honestly. I never had any extreme cases but i do defend myself (which is frowned upon by riot) or just generally argue or ask someone nicely not to feed. Retaliation can get you banned. Depending on the circumstances lesser offence are usually just chat restrictions. A riot must have looked over your chat logs and deemed you worthy of a 2 week suspension rather then chat restrictions.

Thank you for your explanation. So, I guess it's completely up to Riot whether they decide I deserve a chat restriction or suspension and the other guy deserve a discipline or not. They did send me a chat log of that last game, but weird thing was it was just all me talking which makes me look like a toxic player. I demanded them to look over the entire chat, not just mine, but hear no response. Not sure if they actually did look over the entire chat, or just looked over mine and made a decision. And when you said "reports probably build up over time", does Riot not send any warning or notice until those reports stack a lot enough to sentence a huge discipline?

Sometimes they do send little warnings like "We all know people have bad days . blah blah blah" and it says you have been reported for "Verbal/Negative Attitude/Whatever the reason" or something like that but not always. They also do read over all the chat log i believe since during such a time they don't care if the other people also flamed since as stated they don't like retaliation and retaliation is met with equal force of the antagonist. Also they may take into consideration the amount of reports over X games within X time to aid in there determination. This is all things a riot has either said/hinted/or i just got the general assumption from. As i do NOT work with riot (even if i wish i did) i do NOT know how they work exactly. (As in 100% this is what and how they determine things)

Wow sounds like you do know a lot about this, and I would actually believe it if you tell me you work for Riot haha. You pretty much answered everything I was curious about and wanted to know. So I guess luck is also accounted for suspension partially. Only if I knew about this beforehand, I could've just held it in no matter how bad they make me mad. At least I know better now lol. "the first time it's a mistake the second time it's a choice". I wish all players are mature enough to not rage and stuffs. I never rage, but it's so hard not to retaliate when someone rages at me or cusses at me :( But anyway, thanks!

Put yourself in the shoes of your teammates. After seeing all of that stuff you said, would they want you to be punished? Your decision to continue retaliating for the whole game reflects poorly on you.

Riot used to have a policy of giving a substantial amount of warning before getting to serious punishments. After being caught violating the rules the first time, you were given either a 3-day ban or just an official warning (and then a 3-day ban next time). This was then followed by a 7-day ban, and then a 14-day ban. Only after the 14-day ban would you get permabanned.

After a while, Riot found that certain types of toxic players who were given escalating punishments were almost guaranteed not to reform. The numerous chances only meant that they would have more opportunities to ruin games. They decided that going straight to 14 days at the start would remove those players from the community sooner, and that that would provide the best experience for the players.

tl;dr This 14-day ban is your warning or notice.

Great answer! I appreciate that. I am not arguing against you, but this seems like an unfair treatment though. I clicked your source and read what Lyte said, but to me, it seems like he is just grouping up the entire players and made a decision.

For instance, just because some players ignore warning, he assumes all will ignore, therefore no friendly warning for everyone? I'm an Asian, so I will use one example of myself. Just because you see one Asian in front of you who is great at math, (typical stereotype) doesn't mean every Asian is good at math.

This is MOBA game we are playing here, which even itself stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Let's be honest, who does not get competitive or likes to lose when playing battle game? I'm an imperfect human being, so when someone goes unreasonably irritating to me, I cannot help but to fight against it. I know that tolerance is the key, but like I said, I'm imperfect and I tend to forget about tolerance and fight back. This would've been a perfect time for a light heads-up warning.

I just feel like if Dr. Lyte were to group up the entire players and set no exception, it would've been better to just forbid those cussing words. Every word exists for us to express, but if Riot would just jump straight to 2 weeks of suspension without any light warning for first violator, that is where I feel mistreatment and stereotyping. I, myself, make lots of mistakes, but I triple make sure I don't make the same mistake twice.

Sorry if my point was too wordy, but after reading your source, I wanted to jot down what I felt about it. It completely makes all sense, and I do agree that there are lots of players out there who ignore friendly warnings.

Anyway, I'm not trying to set any new rule here, just love having discussions like this.

Whether too harsh or not, I definitely learned not to retaliate nor rage at others once again. I will be back as more friendly player 2 weeks from now. Happy LoLing! :)

Discussions are good!

A couple important things I want to add are:

  • Getting a punishment is rather difficult. Even if it seems like there are a lot of toxic players around, most of the abuse and rage comes from normal players on their worst behavior, perhaps because they felt provoked when they were already having a bad day. The bans are for people who aren't just occasionally bad. Last I heard, only the worst 1% of players receive bans. That's a large part of why you seldom see an outpouring of sympathy for banned players on these forums. Even when you account for a generous margin of error (maybe they really do get more false reports than most people), they're still well within the worst 5%.

  • Cussing is not actually bannable unless you're using some really offensive language (e.g. racial slurs). You can say shit fuck tits bitch ass every game and not get in trouble. But using these terms to abuse people can earn you legitimate reports. If someone reports you for saying "fuck this bullshit broken frog champ" or "I fucked up my Q-E combo", it shouldn't count against you at all.
