How luck-oriented are ranked games?

Some people I KNOW believe ranked to be slightly more luck-based than skill-based while others may disagree.

Luck means getting good teammates, not having a leaver, etc.

Skill means to simply be good enough to win lane and carry or be very helpful to your team

The only thing that really requires luck is the critical system. You will never make it anywhere in this game if you rely on luck.

I don't see how it's luck at all. If you get bad teammates that's an issue of skill, not luck. The only thing that's luck is whether or not you or the enemy team get an afk, which happens, but not often.

It is like 90% skill and 10 luck in anything above bronze its more like 60 % skill then 40% luck in bronze

Luck certainly is a factor, but really it mostly determines how long it takes you to get to where you belong. All these things people talk about holding them back happen to everyone so for them to actually hold you back they have to happen to you more often than others. I think most people also over exaggerate the impact a lot of these things have on your rank. Take afks for example. An afk is basically a guaranteed loss unless you were massively ahead when someone leaves or the other team is completely incompetent. So that's bad luck, sure. But people view losses from afks as if they were otherwise guaranteed wins when in reality they were going to lose roughly half those games anyway.

But, if you play 100+ games its unlikely that any luck factor is significantly holding you down and becomes even less likely every game you play.

I agree. You mean to tell me its an issue of skill when i get the 12 year old insta lock teemo top that goes 0/8 to nasus in 5 minutes because of champion select. Now i got free farm nasus running around 2 shotting towers and then everyone afks. Id say thats luck that the kid is not like 4 years older with a hell of lot more awareness

if its skill how does everyone have a winrate around 50%? exactly like a coin toss.

I might say 60% skill and 40% luck in ranked specifically, and if you are above gold I would say closer to 70/30

Even at the highest level you still have to factor in:

  • the unlucky afk,
  • the enemy team ending up with the more skilled on their champion players vs
  • your team "trying x champ out" in ranked, because people do that for some reason
  • someone having a bad day and raging, or being on tilt from losses, etc
  • the jackass who trolls because...who knows why people do that in ranked

The things above aren't guaranteed to happen, but when they happen, it can make winning that much harder, and pull the control a little bit out of your hands, but not completely.

I wouldn't say any match is 90% skill vs luck or 90% luck vs skill, but luck IS a factor. Skill is just a more important factor.
