If Swain lost his ultimates effect with zhonyas?
In clarification, what if it was like almost a channel, where the birds dont heal/do damage while he is zhonyasd?
How much of a gutting would that be?

I wouldn't call it a channel, even if you want Zhonyas to cancel it. Silence, stuns, and displacements all end channels, where as a toggle ability cannot be turned off during each of the mentioned CC effects.
As for your point Swain would simply stop buying Zhonyas. It's armor is nice for him, and the AP is fantastic, but it would no longer an amazing brawling weapon like it currently is. Making a change like that would also cause Morgana and Fiddlesticks to likely get some changes to match. Can't be focusing on a single champion when it's the mechanic you're actually looking at. It would hurt Morgana and Fiddle a whole lot more than it would hurt Swain.
