Riot, you guys need to be more honest and transparent.

First off, your new marketing stinks. Oh, it's probably effective, alright. But it's ridiculously dishonest to long-time players of the game. And I'm not just talking about re-releasing previously "limited" skins, which is just crap to begin with. But while I'm on that topic;

  1. You SPECIFICALLY separated skins into limited and legacy on one harrowing one year. This was no accident. You guys did this intentionally to persuade buyers of the skins, as the "limited" would be just another "feature" of a product we were purchasing.

  2. What the fk is legacy anyways? Skins that are just re-released EVERY YEAR? WHY EVEN MAKE THEM LIMITED? Just release them permanently into the store already. They aren't special in any way.

  3. Your pricing on the old skins. Magnificent TF for 1820. Seriously, that's all i need to say. I'm not going to touch on how one riot asked for suggestions on making it better, how another riot promised to make it better, and we're still left with the laughable excuse for a "legendary" skin.

Speaking of pricing, you "upped" old RP prices to "better define" price tiers, only to now shower us with even more arbitrary RP costs. Runeguard Volibear? 975RP! Blackthorn Morgana? 1350RP! Ghost Bride Morgana? 975RP! Seriously, only an idiot couldn't tell that the original RP "increase" was a cash grab. Don't tell me the RP decreases counted - you decreased half of them to your new "750" tier, even though most people (me included) can't for the love of god see the difference between half the 750/975/520 skins. You only decreased because they weren't popular, and increased because they were.

1350 skins everywhere.

Only 750 skin was the tpa ones, if i recall it right.

Your new "lore" content consists of half-assed events, with some guy popping up to tell US TO MAKE OUR OWN STORIES. "Come up with your own Harrowing stuff!" "Come up with your own snowdown stuff!"

Speaking of lore, you said you'd replace the JoJ with something "better" that "better" shows the story of the league. Let me recap with that here:

  1. You got rid of the JoJ, which did show the lore fairly well, by accessing various champions in the guise of interviews, and the like. Noxus vs Demacia, Ionia's protest, stuff like that were covered well here.

  2. We now have...1 to 2 "events" that showcase about 3 hours worth of actual writing, rather than the 12 "monthly" JoJs of old. The production went all into the shiny graphics and art, right? Well, that's fine, but the stories are now less than barebones. Trundle is now troll king! Allied with Lissandra! /story. Remember when Noxus vs Demacia over Kalamandra lasted quite a few issues over the course of a few articles? Now we have "Lissandra vs Sejuani vs Ashe! Fight begins!" with no real ending.

  3. You got rid of the League judgements for nothing. Cheers.

I really don't see this as a "better" way of delivering the lore.

Oh, and the right Rioters never reply to these complaints anymore. Giving thanks to Ironstylus or Montag for actually replying, but since half these complaints address the pricing, where the hell is Hippalus? What, you mean I have to-

Use fking Reddit. I am on YOUR WEBSITE, to talk about YOUR STUFF, and to YOU. What's with going on Reddit for forums? What, the forums aren't good enough to talk with? Then make it better? Oh wait.

You guys CHANGED THE FORUMS, with NO VISIBLE IMPROVEMENTS, with ONE LARGE ASS DOWNSIDE. Why can't I access the first page of threads anymore?

I realize I'm not probably not going to get any responses, outside of standard PR control (only if this gets big enough, which it probably won't). Just needed to vent.

You make a lot of pretty solid points, at least as far as things that Riot should address and be upfront about with the community. Specifically the complete abandonment of any significant lore really saddens me, because I really enjoyed finding the JoJ and reading through them and was really disappointed to find out it was discontinued. My only complete about your post is the "legacy" or limited edition skins issue. Are people still crying about that? There isn't anything wrong with them bringing back certain skins so that newer players who weren't around when they were initially released can purchase them, especially when original owners were reimbursed and compensated when Riot had no obligation to do so. On top of that, there are some really great skins that they said (and weren't) going to be brought back (ie King Rammus the one that looks like bowser, championship Riven, and the like). I don't think the premise of excluding certain parts of the community just so other users can feel special and entitled is a very good standard to have.

Overall, a very great post and I really hope that Riot takes the time to seriously communicate over these issues.

These are all extremely valid points and I'd love to see Hippalus be open and up front, no sugar coating or back handed talking, no dancing, no PR control, just straight forward "Ya this is why we did it, and you make an good point" talking.

I'd be cool with the re-introduction of the "Limited Edition" skins (several of which I owned from the original releases) IF they didn't keep other skins limited.

The constant example I use, and will always use, is PAX Jax. They brought back all the skins that I was happy to own and have people constantly say, "I've never seen that skin before, it's awesome!" I'm fine with letting people buy those skins.

However, there's never been a point in my life where I could afford to go to any PAX event, and I wouldn't attend it even if I could simply because I'm not interested in such things. Nevertheless, those skins, and a few others, are still limited and I can't have them.

That's my gripe with the situation: why did Riot bring back Limited skins that were available in-game to anyone who was present at the original release, but still keep these other skins locked away for people who are willing to pay way too much to go to a PAX event?

I mean, I guess I could buy a code on Ebay for $50, but let's be real here. That's just stupid. I'm just all about fairness, and I don't see this as a fair situation, though I'm happy that people are able to get their hands on those cool skins from days long past. I even got my hands on Headless Hecarim after I missed that particular skin during the original release.

Yeah, I really hate to see a legacy skin I bought, released only the next year.

As far as venting goes, this was well said and I kind of wish more people could keep as level of a head as you did with this post, good job on that.

As far as the skins go, imo the reason Hippalus and the marketing team in general don't reply to any of the complaints of the limited skins (either against the unlock or your argument for just unlocking them always) is because there will always be good business sense to justify their decision and if they made a profit with that move, factoring in angry customers and complaints as well, then they will continue to do that.

As far as the lore goes, I really do agree with you. While the previous lore with judgments and all definitely weren't enough they were a great look into a champion's personality and character. Combined with the JoJ I could really see a world in motion, and that's the problem, progress. League cannot have lore outside of short snippets of an origin story because that would show progress within the world and start conflicting with established lore and create dissidence within the story. Best example is the Frejord 'event', if there was an actual ending it would mean that 2 champions within LoL would be dead, truly and forever, to signify one as the true queen. Things like this will always bring anything short of very clever third party reports (JoJ) down because rivalries can never be resolved (Renekton v Nasus), political strife can never end (Noxus v Damacia) and champions will never be killed just re-worked. It's less of the lore team ignoring the lore and more like them almost accepting defeat in light of this puzzle. Personally I want to help them more than complain about what they're doing wrong. The request to make our own stuff (again imho) was less of them being lazy and more of a cry for help.

As for Reddit and all that. Riot has put themselves in a corner with the new Community Beta because that's just it, it's a Beta and an incredibly early one at that. But they still have to move away from the preferred older forums so they don't attract any new people to something they're going to be taking away eventually. But they can't use the new beta because it's an unpolished, still confusing, and just unfinished system. Answer? Reddit. It's a popular enough extension with enough of a base to get feedback and a system that can handle the stupidly large amount of responses they'll get for posting literally anything.

And the skin pricing, same as what I said before. If they'll make money with it they'll keep doing it. Does that mean any and all new skins will more than likely suffer from this 'price creep'? Probably. Add in the fact they're a major Global company now so they can't release silly skins like Surprise party Fid and what-not nearly as easily now and skins will always be lacking the simplicity they held before.

Now, if anyone managed to read that wall of text I would like to say

  1. thank you, you're awesome
  2. I do this kind of thing often sorry
  3. Happy Holidays
  4. If you agree with OP, at least as far as the New Community Beta goes, please keep in mind it's in Beta and as such you and anyone else can help improve it with constructive feedback and clever ideas. If you do not already, please take a moment to explore different areas here (I suggest Fan Creations, good stuff there) and think about what can be improved about the presentation, readability and visibility of the posts and such. Then post your idea(s) in New Community Feedback. Thank you.

I think riot really needs to see this.

Frayace12/24/2013, 11:04:57 PM1 votes

Well, one of the problems of the JoJ was how hard it was for newer players to sit down and read it. I liked reading some of the interviews, but I didn't want to spend several hours trying to read all of it, and if I didn't read all of it, I knew I would miss something important, you know?
I still want them to do more than just introductions for characters and events with no ending, but I don't know what they could do to improve their lore.
