A serious thought about the change in League of Legends lore and background

An x-post I made from the League of Legends subreddit.

I am now aware of a similar post, and I mean something like it, but not as big: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=4839983 http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/miscellaneous/OxYmwrMQ-the-lore-is-a-mess-and-ill-fix-it-here

If you hadn't already known, Riot is undertaking a massive overhaul on background stories and lore.

To quote Carnival J of riot, "No, Summoners, the Fields of Justice and the Institute are not canon within the fictional world of Runeterra. In-game, players are still referred to as summoners - but summoners won't be part of the story."

This means (if i'm not wrong), that in game League of Legends will now have less to do with the lore, and every lore/content-based details will no longer be pertinent any more. I know a large part of the community dislikes this, and I won't deny that I am slightly disappointed with this, but I understand why Riot wants to 're-organize' this whole aspect of the game in order to create more freedom in it's general direction. However, I feel like Riot does not need to approach this problem by rendering everything from the past completely obsolete, but instead, Riot should solve this in a way quite a few other fictional universes has.

What I'm trying to say that Riot should make this change part of the story by creating an event that will drastically alter Runeterra, thus ending this old, restricted 'age', which results in the beginning of a newer, different 'age'. Games like Runescape (if I'm not mistaken) have done this, as every time a there is a massive update (once again I'm not a regular player, so I'm not 100% sure), a new age is started, allowing for the choice of implementing new ideas. If you still don't get what I mean, Riot should model their history/background/lore somewhat off the structure of Runescape/Lord of the Rings. This way, they get to start anew with different features/style while still keeping the older parts canon.

Of course, I haven't thought this completely through, but I feel like this would help out both sides of the issue. Thank you.

tl;dr Riot should set the old lore as an 'age' and end it with a big event, thus allowing the creation of a new 'age' so that they can implement the changes they want while still keeping old stuff relevant.
