How does MMR Even Work

Me and my friend who are both Gold 5 are being placed against Plat 2's and Plat 4's. In most of these ranked games we are the only Gold players. Although we aren't doing awful in some of them it still feels so unfair. Are we just outliers in this situation like what's going on, I'm actually scared of playing ranked because I might get smashed.

It's kind of pointless and senseless to worry about the rank of your opponents. Fighting whether it is in games or real life is as much psychological warfare as it is actual fighting. You'll make yourself tilt.

Odds are, the plat players are tilting enough to include you two and you two have high enough mmr to play with plat players. Either way, I wouldn't be concerned about it.
