School and Gaming Laptop Help

Hello Summoners,

I was wondering if anyone had some good tips on buying a budget gaming laptop. I'm trying to buy something that can run most games with a high fps. It doesn't have to be on high settings but I don't want medium setting LoL testing the hardware. I really just want something to do my homework on and be able to play games on occasionally. I already have a decent gaming PC and I just need something to do school work on, take notes, and possibly edit videos.

I just want a realistic estimate on what I may be paying and what my options are. And what the price may be for what I want to achieve. Any help is appreciated.

I would recommend the Lenovo y50. While i have the y70, the y50 has similar specs (just smaller), Lenovo makes some relatively inexpensive gaming machines while still performing fairly well.

From my experience with the y70, it runs LoL at 60+ FPS on Very High and it can handle modern games fine at medium to high settings. The i7 4710HQ and the GTX 860M together make a quite powerful yet mobile machine. Downside is the battery life, of course, but if u tone everything down and not play games, u can still manage a 4 hour battery life I've heard, which is very good as a gaming laptop.

so yeah i recommend the lenovo Y50 or the Y70 depending on your size preference. I wouldnt recommend going to the Y40 because that uses an ultrabook CPU, which is less powerful than the full mobile one.

By the way, if u care about good viewing angles u should get the touch models because I've heard that the regular ones use TN panels which have very poor viewing angles

I was actually going to recommend about the same thing.

I bought my laptop from Lenovo's refurbishing outlet, specifically for students. I have the Lenovo Y510P, and it cost me about $700 after taxes.

I recommend using this website. It's how I decided on what to buy.

Yes the Y510p is the previous generation and I've heard it performed quite well. just an older graphics card and CPU mostly

To be honest, I do not have much experience with laptops. I bought this one for a school / gaming combo as well, and I used the website I suggested to review what laptops I thought I wanted. The website itself seems very high quality.

However, I will say that for what I wanted (quad core, 8 GB ram, dedicated GFX card, good resolution, cheap), this was the best I found. I will say that I have never had issues with my laptop overheating, except for a minor incident. I was trying to play a poorly optimized game in alpha, and I didn't have a framerate cap on. Laptop got pretty hot, pretty fast. Other than that, it never goes over 70C on my lap and if I use a cooler, it stays at a comfortable 40C - 50C.

I read some reviews for that laptop, and I did consider this one. It has very similar specs to the one I bought. I think there were probably some minor aesthetic reasons why I did not buy this one, or perhaps my issue was price. I'd suggest comparing them on the website I linked you.

Hmm. I use Acer :P It runs league at 160 Fps, and only costed me around 600$. Not bad for a 2 year old laptop. I'll give you the model if you want

May be laggy on Windows 8, but on windows 8.1... Let's just say i can tweak it so that it loads up in 5 seconds...
