Why are people so toxic?

Anywhere else besides league, everyone is so forgiving. But in this game, if you don't even make a mistake people will cuss you out for literally no reason. Is this game meant to attract those kinds of people? Honestly, is that the audience this targets? Every single game all I see in chat is someone cussing someone else out over the smallest mistake. I had a morgana in my last game private invite to chat and I had no idea why and said "you fucking pussy bitch learn to ping and go back to school where you belong bitch" then left the chat. I literally do not know why this game attracts such horrible people.

There are several factors to toxicity in online gaming.

Competitive nature. If you aren't winning them the game, then you are losing them the game.

Large player base. More people leads to a higher chance of playing with a negative personality.

The disconnection from a person to an avatar/username. Easier to scapegoat someone. IRL, you are interacting with other people directly.

Esports/meta. This is what restricts a person from playing how they want to play. Otherwise you get flamed.

Typically short games. You only have to play with 9 other people for 20-60 minutes. Who cares how you act to them?

Self justification. I am right, you are wrong. I made the right decisions. I played it correctly. etc.

I've experienced this in WoW battlegrounds (never did arena), WoW LFG dungeons/LFR raids, SMITE (which I don't play anymore because of negative players multiple games in a row), Call of Duty, Halo, even Hearthstone to a degree. I expect toxicity to increase in Heroes of the Storm when it gets out of beta.

people follow people. League is the most played game, it's the most popular MOBA, so elsewhere you have the people that care about the game and focus on play where as here you have people who play league only because others do as well. So naturally we get a lot more toxic people here than elsewhere. When people compare League to Xbox live they're not far off imho.

Same thing with: COD, Counter Strike, DOTA, Team Fortress, etc. When a game is popular, it attracts more people. More people means more assholes.

Honestly, and unfortunately, you will encounter this type of behavior in almost every online game that has a competitive scene (and probably those that don't); it's not limited to League of Legends. An example: I play quite a bit of CS:GO and I literally cannot go an entire match without someone spewing the same type of drivel both via text and over the mic. This is especially true when I'm playing competitive matchmaking and even it gets even worse when playing on CEVO and ESEA.
