You need to swap your trinket for a Sweeping Lens as soon as you get Sightstone, and preferably upgrade it soon after 9. Ruby SS is also not a huge priority. I prefer Mobi boots for most supports; I wouldn't suggest getting Ninja Tabi by default, get them when you simply need the armor. Homeguard's shouldn't be a common upgrade; get them when you find yourself defending close to your base a lot, Alacrity will be better for you the entire game while Homeguard's is only useful close to home. Captain's isn't a bad option, but honestly, boot upgrade is not a priority purchase for support. You also don't have to rush Frost Queen's Claim; getting Frostfang early is good for gold generation, but late game swapping for Talisman of Ascension is not a bad idea since it's easier to get its max effect by boosting the whole team.
I rush Sightstone. After that, if we're ahead and I'm an AP support, I build Twin Shadows. Otherwise, the gold item is next on the list. Build boots somewhere around here if you're not Janna. (Janna doesn't need boots.) Remember to grab pinks, especially against stealth champions.
I typically swap the FotM for a Talisman on Leona (and other engage supports) when my teammates start killing minions before I can execute them. I'll swap a FQC for a Talisman if my team's engagers have no mobility skills (Udyr, Volibear etc). Generally, Talisman is the best finished support item, but its early stages are weaker to compensate.
For tanky supports (Leona, Braum, Thresh) you'll want to build a Randuin's and a Locket, depending on who you're up against. (Against Kat, Akali or any AoE magic damage, rush the Locket. No resets on your watch!) Frozen Heart is also good if you're up against attack speed -based champs (Vayne, Aatrox). Buy Mobis, Mercs. Others are more situational.
For AP supports (Janna, Nami, Lulu) you'll want to build a Twin Shadows and a Crucible. If you're ahead, rush Shadows after the Sightstone. You can pick up a few tank items, but you should position to where the enemies can't instagib you. If you have spammable shields/heals, consider buying an Ardent Censer if your team likes attack speed. Zeke's Herald is also a decent aura item. If fed, buy a Rabadon's. Boots should be Mobis or Sorcs (if you deal a lot of magic damage yourself, eg Morg's puddle), others are situational.
