More player participation in the evolution of the lore
So, for a while now, I've kind of felt like everything story-related kind of takes place far, far in the background for us players. I feel like this is a shame, and that there are most likely ways to involve players in a way that doesn't necessarily mean throwing things out of balance or deciding things based on polls etc. I've been thinking about how to do it for a while, and I have come up with a few examples of things I think might work. This is all opinion, of course, but I feel it might be a positive thing to have players actually become more involved in the story of LoL and Runeterra, rather than reading a champion bio and static interactions between two specific champions. While those are nice things, I don't feel they move the story or the world along at all.
Now, someone like Mordekaiser, Malzahar or Viktor are all fairly big name villains in the story off the top of my head, so their machinations could be used as a base. Let's take Mordekaiser as an example for this particular one.
Mordekaiser is related to the Shadow Isles, which you may know as a horrible place of undeath and darkness. But, what if the powers that be on the Shadow Isles (the Ruined King I believe) decides that the Shadow Isles' reach must be extended - so, Mordekaiser is sent out to make sure this happens, as he too is bound to the Shadow Isles.
The first sign of this incursion might pop up in SR - you might see that a bush or two have withered, maybe SR occasionally starts with a darkened weather, there's a dead patch of grass in the jungle... nothing major, but small signs of what is to come. The evolution might continue; the infestation of death becomes more obvious - wolves might be replaced by spiders (as we know the Shadow Isles love those guys), a part of the river might've turned greenish or dead, more bushes have died and so on.
This might continue for a while, until Riot for instance could announce that "Holy shit guys, SR is under attack by the undead hordes of the Isles!" At this point, they might add a special event map with Shadow Isles and allies vs a bunch of representatives of the other parties - a collection of those heroic and unselfish people who'd fight it, for instance. There's a few ways it could go from here in my mind;
For instance, they could make another official lore battle like the Ionia vs. Noxus match of yore, or they could perhaps just draw statistics from the event map - who won the most battles, etc. and then decide the victor out of those. The end result would be that something has changed - maybe a champion fell to darkness and became affiliated with the Shadow Isles, earning a new VU to help them into that niche (with a Classic skin, of course) or a permanent makeover of SR if it falls entirely.
Could coincide with skin releases that fit the theme (Dark Hunter Galio, Lightbringer Kassadin, for instance, just to name some generic and silly examples), wards, etc, or even maybe a new actual in-game item born out of the conflict. All kinds of things that could play off of such a conflict and theme.
Anyway, that was all just an example of the type of involvement I'd love to see in the actual story of LoL. I hope I'm not the only one who feels like we could be involved a bit more.
