At This Point, Thresh has 5 skins...
Now, I'm not going to bring up the whole argument about how Zac (who came out 2 champs after Thresh) and Gnar (who came out 10 after) still don't have any new skins, as we've all already argued and complained about that many a time.
I was just thinking of something when I saw the new SSW Thresh skin released-- Thresh now has more skins than the past released 26 champions (from Bard to Draven). 2 of these being skins given to him because of his popular play in Ranked.
No champion before has shown up in ranked this much and been this influential since their release, Thresh only being closely followed by Janna (Victorious Janna and Fnatic Janna). Considering that Thresh has yet to show any real slow in play amount, how has Riot not looked at him at all?
I mean, I get the fact that Thresh is a great champion, and I like him myself-- he has more utility than most other champions in the game and an instant non-ult "Save-The-Carry" button. (I would include other supports such as Janna, Lulu, etc.-But theirs are ults, and it's still very possible to catch them even after with the assistance of dashes or just killing them with Lulu's.) I also get that he has weaknesses, like starting with no base resistances pretty much (although he does get quite tanky late game). I wouldn't say Thresh's numbers are overtuned or undertuned, they are pretty balanced actually. Not too much damage but not too weak either.
At this point-- it's more of his kit that's the problem. Thresh has the Yasuo syndrome (or rather, Yasuo has the Thresh Syndrome), in that Thresh has great things-- lots of them-- one put right on top of the other. (Yasuo has double crit, free shield, a line-skillshot q that's on an auto-attack's cooldown, hard long-range cc, 0 cd dashes, the infamous wind-wall that's stronger than a support's version of the same thing, hard-cc long-range ult, free last whisper with said ult) Thresh has a mix of Blitzcrank and Nautilus's hook-- while getting the option to dash in or not-- a knockup/slow, a 99% box-in slow, a 2-person shield (glad it's not full team anymore), which also acts as a "save anyone from any situation button." Now, all of these are unique and awesome mechanics, and really cool to have in the game. The problem is, having all of these packed in to one champion-- it makes it so that in the hands of a competent player, or even worse, a professional player, that Thresh is an absolute nightmare of utility that fits with literally any team comp, with almost no downsides. (The one downside being that he does NOT have a heal)
Now, before people rant, no, this isn't a "Omg Thresh OP GG" thread-- I love Thresh to death myself, he's a fun to play champion with an amazing theme, and was one of my mains for a while after his release. (Now replaced moreso by Taric and Bard-- and of course any other support I feel like playing at the time.) It's more of a player's concern for the health of the game-- with Thresh as he is, what's to stop him from continually showing up in more ranked professional matches? And, as has been demonstrated before, winning? He could continually keep being strong and getting more and more (Insert Ranked Team Name Here) Skins, dominating the pro support scene with his wide variety of utility and choices he can make with everything he has.
Some people would say just to release more skins for the other 26 champions he's beating out, but this isn't about the skins. It's the fact that he's getting these skins because of who he is-- and who he is is strong, very strong. I just feel like something, anything, needs to be done with him.
