Question about the new season placement matches?

I know Riot said this season's placements will have less of an impact (you'll stay around your previous season's rankings) but they talked a bout a soft reset? What exactly is a soft reset? Also, I quit playing league for a while during season 4, and played barely any ranked at all. I started back at league on the first day of Preseason 5 and have played a good amount of ranked games since being back. I have gained a lot of elo during the preseason and I was wondering if my placements will be based around my elo at the end of S4, or at the end of this preseason? I'd hate to have to make the miserable journey I just suffered all over again. Thanks.

I'll answer the questions you asked as best I can.

Soft reset: You can imagine it like this: your first 10 placement matches are taken into account as if you had never played before. Say you get 6-4 and would have normally gotten placed in Silver IV. However, this is before it takes into account the MMR you build up this season. So let's say that you obtained Gold V this season. The system will then take the average of the two, and place you in that league (Silver II in this example). In this way, the reset will tend to place you closer to where you ended up last season, but where you ended up will not entirely dictate where you start this season.

As to your question on whether this reset is dictated by end of season or end of pre-season MMR, it is the later. The soft-reset is based off of your end of pre-season mmr.
