ZenBudS1 voteslol they ban you if you get reported and you have tripped the sensors with a phrase or words you have used... I always use sarcasm now to avoid getting unfairly banned. Rengar comes to gank my lane and doesnt jump from a bush, just rolls right on down throws his slow, misses, then walks away. I say "you are really good, rengar" makes me feel better, and i don't get banned. It sucks that they have taken the human out of actually investigating what happened but thats the truth.

Riot does not issue chat "bans". You will have restricted chat, meaning you can only type a limited number of messages per match. You start with a few and then gain one every few minutes. You can also use smart pings normally.

From the limited information you have given it doesn't sound like your punishment was unjust. You don't get punished for being upset, you get punished for how you behave. If someone said something about your sister or you being raped that is unacceptable as well but that does not give you a free pass to do what ever you want. Unless that threat included your address then there isn't any reason to care about it. Just ignore/mute and report at the end.

Well it seems like you remember that game(although punishments, especially chat restrictions are usually for repeated negative behavior not single incidents). Maybe you don't remember exactly what you said to them but do you have any idea?
You can submit a support ticket if you really believe it was a mistake. I have been hearing reports that they aren't giving chat logs for chat restrictions anymore but they will still go over your case and give you a confirmation.

Chat restrictions are generally for high frequency less severe incidents. Like maybe 1 guy gets banned for calling someone a nigger once and another gets chat restricted for calling 50 people an idiot.

If someone punched me in the face I would punch them back. But no one punched you in the face. They anonymously told you, a stranger, some mean things. Things that you can completely stop by muting them. If someone punches you then you may be in actual danger. They may not stop at once, etc.
If you can't stop yourself from responding then you are going to continue to be punished because retaliating is not allowed.

It's often less about specific words and more about being a jerk to your teammates (or even enemies, if you take it too far). "Adult" language is not usually a problem by itself, unless you constantly swear like a sailor.
In another reply here you said:

Those are not acceptable ways to talk to your teammates. Riot does not care if the other players are being jerks or they started it, you're responsible for your own behavior. Allowing "he started it" defenses leads down a slippery slope to things like "oh, well, it was fine that you told him you'd hunt him down and cut his throat, because he said he'd rape your mom first". Riot's just going to ban both those players instead, beacuse that's what the player-run Tribunal consistently did over hundreds of thousands of cases.
That said, if someone insults you, a single "fuck off" followed by muting them is probably not going to get you in trouble. It's more of a problem when you sit and argue all game long with a troll. If someone is being a jerk, just mute them. Someone slinging insults wants to get a rise out of you; getting into a screaming match with them in chat is letting them get the better of you.
So how do I go about my appeal?
You should have received an email from Riot with a link to the last game that lead to the punishment (although it's possible they are only doing this for time bans and not chat restrictions; they changed their system recently).
If you want more information about your punishment, or to appeal, you can open a ticket with Support here: https://support.riotgames.com/hc/requests/new . However, if your defense is "but they started it, I was only defending myself!", I'll tell you right now that an appeal is unlikely to go anywhere.

Taredom1 votesI hate to be the guy that says it but you can't respond to these kids, I'm not sure if you instigated the fight but if they're saying things like that to you and you flagged it, they at the very least got an account suspension, I'm sure riot took into consideration that you were retaliating to such harsh comments, which is why you got this slap on the wrist.
Either mute them and report them later, or don't stoop to their level and civilly work your problem out with them so that you have some chance of winning that game. Responding with toxic comments back only makes the game worse.

It was tough the one game I've played, "ty" or "gj" - christ just look at my history riot, like Homeland does - see what I speak. I'll admit there are times, oh man, where I love gloating - but I'm not an asshole about it!
And that's what upsets me, ugh, should print a page for everyone - every little thing we said and participated in should be logged - then WE can decide who the dicks are... accountability amirite?

Everything said in game is logged. And people did decide, they reported you.

Just gotta be the bigger person, I'll admit, if someone said any of the things that you listed in your OP, I would undoubtedly hit them in the face.
In this game though, you have to control your behavior, I also recommend taking it a step further, kill them with kindness and be as positive as you can, you win more games that way, when you see someone make a good play, tell them, when you see someone actively warding, tell them that they are doing a solid job on that. On the flip side, when you see someone do a stupid dive, don't ask why, if they repeat the mistake, in a nice way explain to them how they can find themselves not in that position.
If you have time or any sort of commute basically anywhere and you like podcasts, I would highly recommend the Trinity Force Podcast, they touch base a lot on attitude and how to react to certain situations, it's never good to go on tilt and reacting negatively pretty much means the game is over, never lose hope, play nice and play to win.

The thing is, whether you're responding to a troll, an ass or someone arrogant and insulting, you can't. It's against the terms that you agreed to be toxic in any way towards any member of the community, even if they're being toxic to you. I know it sounds like bull, but it's how it is, I suggest just muting and moving on, ignore the random kids that think they're internet badasses and move on, not worth giving them the time of day.
At the end of the day Riot reads the things that you said, in context and decides whether your behavior was tolerable, you assisted in a toxic environment for the other 3 people on your team, by retorting, you provoked more argument. Learn and move on my friend.
