Ranked Team Question

I was wonderin if u join a ranked team when ur level 30, and lets say they are silver, but u havent played the games with them to get to silver, do u get the boarder or do u have to play the games with them in order to get silver? my firend said he is getting silver but he havent played with them and he is in the ranked group
