How to treat your Support - A complete guide

Alright kids, I've been finding some very disturbing trends around here recently. Game after game, everything gets blamed on the support. For a list of the top complaints, please see below.

Draven 1. "Omg, that's my kill" Ezreal 2. "Not my job to buy wards" Kalista 3. "It's your job to die for me"

In order... "No," "it's everybody's job," and finally, "You tremendous idiot."

Let me outline the job of the Support role for those who don't seem to get the concept.

========================================================================================================================================

What is a support?

A support is a secondary champion who goes down into the bot lane with the Marksman (or ADC for your oldies out there) to, as the name suggests, support them. They make sure the map is lit up, they help keep the Marksman up, and they do whatever they can to help their partner (remember this wording later kids) either engage, or disengage from a fight. A 'support' can be most anybody, but they generally have some kind of skill that allows them to CC the enemy.

Anivia Aniva, Soraka Soraka, Nautilus Nautilus, Nami Nami, Braum Braum, Leona Leona, all of them.

... So, where do people get this idea that the support is supposed to DIE for them to get away?

Overall, in a teamfight, the purpose of the Marksman is to pluck people from the back line. The Mage is supposed to be right next to them, destroying face. Their entire job is to auto attack, or cast spells in the general direction of the enemy. But guess who's marking targets by CCing and separating them from their team?

Taric The support.

That's what they do. They don't do tons of damage, they make sure that those capable of doing damage, can, without being obliterated. So, who's going to be the one who saves you when you go HAM, and the entire enemy team is sitting in that bush waiting to rend you asunder?

Janna The support.

Now, to get back to the original grievances portrayed.

  1. If the support takes your kill, deal with it. You get CS, where they don't. You still get assist gold. That gold they got will better assist YOU in pulling YOUR backside out of the fire. Besides, it was probably an accident, or they didn't want the kill to get away if you were too far to get it in time.
  2. It's everybody's job to buy wards. Everybody. ADC, top lane, mid lane, jungle, support. If you need vision? Buy a ward. One person can only have a maximum of 4 wards on the map at any given time. They cannot ward the entire map alone.
  3. No. It's their job to make sure you don't die. Not to die in your place. Sometimes, yes, to save you, they sacrifice themselves. Other times, you're beyond saving, and going back will just give the enemy two kills. Take responsibility for your mistakes. You went too deep, you goofed.

How should you treat your support?

Alright, put the whip away. That's a bad start. Your support is not your slave, you don't treat them like one. You don't make demands. You don't yell at them. That's the /wrong/ way to do things. The support is important, if unappreciated.

Your support is your partner. Treat them like such. They're not your slave, they're your date to the prom. You treat them right. You romance them. You dote on them. They are your bread and butter. They are your sun and stars. They are your world. Do not treat them like trash, as they are in an entirely selfless role. They're there to help you on your way to victory.

Keep them rich.

And they'll make sure you get the same.

The moral of this story (TL;DR)?

If you treat your support right, they'll treat you right.

anyone who would agree to play the support role is weak and therefore trash and can be treated as such.
