I just played a match that placed me in series in ranked duo/solo queue. For some reason Riot said I'd been granted a free win and my first series match has a check mark. Now, don't get me wrong this is lovely, however, is this an actual thing? If so, how do i acquire more free wins? XD Or at least, what did I do to earn one?

If you win one game in your series and lose the next two and instantly get back into your series, you get a free win.
