Whats up with Plat 1?

Someone on my friends list was promoted to P1, he lost 1 match and was demoted back to P2.

I won 2 matches in P1, got to 53 points. I lost the next one, and lost around 30 points (I think), next match I only won 20 points, then next I won 16.

Is P1 the real deal or what?
