Why it takes so long to launch server in Japan?

satsujinsha··12 votes·27,564 views

Some examples, as for how much time it took to launch new LoL's server: (somehow, if any date is wrong, please correct me)

Brazil - Riot Games Sao Paulo announced: 13.04.2012 server launch: 13.09.2012 = 5 months

Oceania - Riot Games Sydney announced: 27.02.2013 server launch: 28.06.2013 = 4 months

Russia - Riot Games Moscow announced: 29.11.2012 server launch: 17.04.2013 = 4 months+

Turkey - Riot Games Istanbul announced: 15.02.2012 server launch: 27.09.2012 = 7 months+

Japan - Riot Games Tokyo announced: 28.04.2014 = 1 year, 1 month - still no server launch

btw anyone know when Riot Games Seoul was first time announced?

It was even possible to launch 2 new servers at once in quite short time - brazilian and turkish server in September 2012. Oceania and Russia server just after 4 months work?

In the time you were launching these new servers, there were no pro teams or league. Japan has own league with pro teams (season 2 already), and is one of the Wild Card region - the only one without a server.

Why it takes 13 months already for japanese server? Could you guys, share with us, difficulties you've met in Japan - compared to other regions? Or is it that japanese girls make you lazy? D:

Still awaiting the JP server. Riot come on! I'm living in Japan and hoped that it will be released mid this year. It's September and still nothing! I would be gutted if it's out next year... Please let your JP fans know when it's due out at least!

Yesterday at the Tokyo Game Show I was standing by the League of Legends tournoi and they posted this on the screen,

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-orhZRQFLCaI/Vf384elSzfI/AAAAAAAAA-I/e8hVnsyLT5E/s1600/IMG_0922.JPG

And they all went wild! So I ask what it was and they sad the JP server was online now and the tournoi that they where playing was on that server!

But when i came home.... there was still no server :(

Riot probably doesnt want to compete with Square Enix's LoVA whose open beta is coming on June 4th

I live in Japan and I don't know what is that Square Enix or Lova, sorry... I don't even like anime or manga. People from abroad Japan think too much by stereotypes about Japanese people and our culture. We can see it especially at games forums/boards.

You don't even realize how popular is LoL atm here - we just need oficial site and server to prove it.

I thought everyone knows Square Enix they made the Final Fantasy series qq

And everyone in Japan play console games only, don't have PC and is crazy about manga+anime = otaku, right? Stereotypes...

Everyone in Japan always brings Katanas on the subway and screams, "おまえ!!!!何ものだ!!!” Then proceeds to taijutsu fight while octopus magically spawn do weird things to schoolgirls.

source: I'm also Japanese I can vouch for this happening on the daily.

There's a difference between assuming based on stereotypes and assuming based on notoriety. Not knowing what Square Enix is is like saying you don't know what Blizzard is or Warner Brothers or The Oxford Press. It has nothing to do with the stereotype.

Reading comprehension. He never said he didn't know what Square Enix is. He said that he didn't know what LoVA is and that it had nothing to do with the topic.

Regardless, I'm curious as to why you bothered to respond to a month old comment.

Im pretty sure there are not many league players. I live in Japan aswell and it is really not popular.

I agree. I live in Japan also and have taught at a multitude of elementary, junior high and high schools and not a single kid that I've mentioned the game to has ever heard of it . The only things they talk about are PS3 and PS4 games.

I really wish they would open a Jap server for times when my NA ping skyrockets up to 300 or 400 ms and I can't play though.

Darcade3332 votes

japan will be flooded with players if they did open one there...

Farm and Charm2 votes

So. . . play league from Japan on the NA server because i live there

and let me tell you this server relocation really screwed us up before it was 120 - 140 ping but now it is like 180 ping the only other region with a good ping is Korea with 50 ping but we cant create an account over there because of the need of a KSSN

Ilmater2 votes

Slightly jelly, mine went from 180-200 to a constant 250. (English Speaker in Hong Kong so can't really play on garena).

Also most of my friends are in Canada and play on NA Q_Q.

Not a Japanese, but live in Japan. And since NA server was moved to Chicago, our ping skyrocketed 8(

I moved to Korean server (have an account there due to going to South often), but it's not a lifesaver, ping is still not that good. RIOT PLZ 8(

Tencent, the company that owns Riot is a Chinese company. Chinese hate Japanese.

What are you on? Tencent runs League of Legends servers on behalf of Riot in China. They don't own Riot, nor does Riot own them. More like a 3rd party contractor (due to issues with foreign companies creating businesses in China).

tencent own about 90% of riot games since season 2=.= you can check the data.,but tencent just let riot makes decisions because they are good at it

Japan will never launch a server because no one in japan plays PC games. People play games at the arcade or on smartphones in Japan. Even if it launches it will fail because of low player base.

Just because there is a small niche group in Japan that plays LoL doesn't mean it's popular enough for Riot to justify development and infrastructure costs. Don't get me wrong, I hope they do follow through with a Japanese server. I'm really tired of playing on NA from here with my ping ranging between 200 and 400ms depending on the time of day. The reality is though, that the game is largely unheard of in this country. The kids at my schools all play games on their PS3s and PS4s and talk to me about it. I always mention that I play LoL to the them, but not a single kid I've talked to has ever recognized the name.

cambokill1 votes

That, son, is because you're talking to kids...The majority of people who play lol here are in their 20's

cambokill1 votes

Wrong

Doc Robot1 votes

How can you be a Japanese gamer and not at least have a passing familiarity with Lords of Vermillion? Hell, we know about it over here in the States.

cambokill1 votes

Been asking for servers since I first discovered LOL, back in 2010. It's been a 5 year wait, so far :'(. But, yeah, the move to Chicago has made it appalling. Just hurry the f#$% up already.
