Hextech crafting and what to do with champion shards

has there been any progress on the whole owning all champions and getting champion shards from hextech crafting? able to trade in 3 for like a key/chest? or something along those lines. ive got 12 shards sitting in mine and have nothing to do with them. would just like to know if Riot has got any plans or ideas yet.
