Can somebody please explain what it exactly means and what is the cause of this? Thanks.

It means that something went wrong on Riot's part so Riot made all matches played during that time a loss prevented.

When Riot's server has gone haywire causing people to disconnect, Riot will permit all disconnecting matches concerning Riot's server a "Loss Prevention" if the team lost. With the loss prevention on, I think you will lose less LP or stay safe without losing any LP.

But I wouldn't trust this function, as it never really works 100% of the time when you're lagging with such a fine high speed internet.

It means next to nothing. Its just Riot giving you the illusion that somehow the effects of your loss were mitigated due to their crappy servers/service. The reality is however that it doesnt stop you from losing MMR for the loss, which is the only stat that really matters in League.

So it means nothing other than Riot is comfortable deceiving players.

It means the server's have been laggin for 3+ hours, and riot turned on LP most likely in the last 30 minutes or so.
