Mid Tower (and maybe Inhibitor) Vs Baron

It's almost been a year now since I've played League and this question about the mid tower vs baron has gotten me really confused.

Let us say hypothetically that the game has been around 20 - 25 minutes, and we are leading in kill count and overall level. We now have the chance to go for the third mid tower and possibly the inhibitor, but the team, despite being closer to the tower, wants to get baron. Is that move worth it?

It has been a recurring scenario in my games and from my experience, it isn't worth it. To begin with, objectives like the third towers before the inhibitors are more important than baron mid-late just for the possible extra pressure it can provide. With a second push it would be possible to take the inhibitor if the first push was unsuccessful. Secondly with the inhibitor down, if we still have enough HP we can still do baron or set up a gank to continue to harass the enemy. Otherwise, we can return to base to get stronger.

But, if instead we get baron, we lose possible pressure and will find it harder to take down the tower. Furthermore, I find that when my team does get baron 9 out of 10 times, we'll just end up returning to base, get items and then farm, not trying to group and gank or push other lanes.

So opinions?

I think that if you have Baron but you lose inhibitor, the Baron will only help you defending, which might compensate a little the loss of the inhibitor, but not the turrets. So cleary not worth it imho.

The thing about baron is that it's a timed buff. If you use it properly and you siege down multiple turrets before it expires then it's really useful. In low elo I've noticed people tend to dick around and get caught after taking baron so it's essentially just global gold and no buff. So pretty much just always go for the tower unless your team seems to be working and communicating together well.

9.9 times out of 10, towers/inhibitors are always the better choice over Baron. I personally don't fee comfortable taking Baron unless at least 2 of the enemy (and the enemy jungler MUST be included in that count) are dead.

Baron respawns. Towers don't. Pretty simple if you ask me.

first of all, when you are confused and there is not much time remained to take the best decision, then it is not important "to do the right thing", but it's fundamental "to do the thing right". so: do something, do whatever, but at least bring a result into your pocket.

  • communication
  • instantaneous response to the decision of the majority if the majority of the team has already decided, just join their decision; no time for discussions, even if it is not the "right thing" at least it is "some"thing, otherwise you will lose time waiting for others to reach your position and then retreat with none of the objectives accomplished. this is the worst situation ever, due to confusion, lack of team spirit and of communication.

but what is the "right thing" to do in general? what is the choice the whole team should take in that situation? this is a complex matter, the answer is always: it depends! it depends on many factors.

sometimes the answer is baron, sometimes is pushing objectives. but those two simple answers are just the two opposite boundaries of a segment of infinite complex situations between these extremities.

so to find the answer to the "baron or objectives" question, you have to ask yourself a lot of many other questions, like the following:

  • are our minion waves already close to objectives? or are being pushed back by stronger minion waves?
  • is our jungler alive? or is theirs?
  • is enemy respawn time taking long enough to let us reach an objective and take it? or will the enemies respawn and defend it by the time we reach it?
  • are our offense-oriented champions (adc, bruiser, fighter) alive? or are our defense-oriented champions (tank, support, crow-controller) alive?
  • are enemy offense-oriented champions (adc, bruiser, fighter) alive? or are enemy defense-oriented champions (tank, support, crow-controller) alive?
  • are alive enemies recalling? are our allies recalling?

if you answer yes to all the first questions, then take objective first. if you answer yes to all the latter questions, then take baron first.

but the previous are just simple sample questions, but most cases you answer yes to some first questions and some yes to some other second questions. and furthermore there are many other questions to be considered in making the right decision.

so again: it is more important to do the right thing, or to do something right? the clock is ticking and the answer to this question is: the most important thing is to not do nothing.

for simplicity I just wanna suggest some reasonings one could take into consideration while playing the following situations...

if all the enemies are dead with long respawn times, your team is alive with adc alive, your minion waves are ahead, then you should try to end the game pushing and taking as many objectives as possible (turret, inhibitor, nexus turret), then retreat warding baron area and considering:

  • starting the baron waiting for the rest of the mates (some already alive, others after respawn) while your enemies will stay near the base defending
  • or just warding baron area, recalling, buying items and become stronger, then reach the baron area again waiting for a last teamfight in your favor

on the opposite, if your pushing strength is not immediately so high compared to enemy's defensive strength (your adc and fighter are dead respawning, while on the enemy side there is someone tanky or with crowd-control still alive and easily defending), your minion waves are far from objectives, then it's better to ward baron area, do baron and then go to lanes with buffed minions to push objectives (mid inner turret, pushing for inhibitor or rotating to other turrets with the whole respawned team and take them). warding before starting baron is important, because if a overconfident alive enemy is coming to you, you can commit on him and kill him, assuring again the baron to your team.

in other cases you can just consider ward baron area, start doing baron with the few tanky allies survived, waiting for your jungler and your adc to respawn or finished their recall and join faster then the enemy team ones... who knows?

hope it helps, but to sum it up: just act!
