Autofill woes

Autofill is a really good concept however at low elo causes entire games to be lost. I just played a game where I was autofilled to support like always and I was the one that ended up feeding my the bot lane and costed the game. I wasnt doing it on purpose however my team did flame me for it. I would have done fine in the lane but I don't have the right runes for it nor the IP to fund the runes. This game encourages its players to pick a role and a pool of champions and become good at them, but autofill completely throws that out the window. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to avoid this happening to me in the future? I don't want to stay in bronze and I have been climbing but this just puts me back and makes me want to stop playing.
