Trolls... Why do you do it?

Corvö·11/11/2014, 2:55:42 PM·4 votes·1,345 views

A lot of games I play in result with some one purposely feeding, verbally abusing, and/or just making the game an unenjoyable experience for all of the players on our team. I just wanted to hear from the trolls themselves, or people that know about trolling, to the reason why people to this. Thanks!

Well, from the trolls point of view, it's fun, and funny to watch people rage and to overall ruin other people's gameplay. Some of them do it just because they can, others do it because they have the mentality of "If I can't get <insert rank> because of trolls, I'm going to troll!"

Verbally abusing/making the game non-enjoyable for fellow players isn't just restricted to trolls. For instance, I just had a game this morning where I was first timing Morgana because of getting her victorious skin. I didn't know she did ridiculous amounts of damage, even on her base (300 damage Q on base, and then that scaling made me lol as I was 1 shotting 1/2 the enemy ADC's hp literally). So I of course was throwing out Q's and unintentionally getting every single kill. However, at the same time, their Blitzcrank was doing the same thing, leaving both ADC's to farm and be fed off assist gold. Their Quinn was fine with this.. Our Varus, was not.. He ended up screaming across chat, calling the jungler a noob for never ganking, and calling me a noob for taking the kills, and in the end, finally AFKed until Ahri and I made a play for Ahri to get a triple kill (leaving me to believe our Varus was just bad at securing kills, he was using Q in AA range without any W stacks on the target), where he finally turned around and said "I'm feeding, will be at dragon pit" in all chat, and that's exactly what he did...

In short, people do it because they either find it hilarious to do, and get actual enjoyment from seeing people rage, or they do it because the game isn't going exactly how they think it should go, even if you're winning.

Trolls do it to make people frustrated. They like to have a reaction about people complaining about them. There really is no other reason. The fact that you are posting this complaining about trolls is a win for trolls.

Last night my friends and I queued up for ranked 5s and trolled the HECK out of people. And by that I mean we fed so hard. You don't even know.

Probably because you feed every game.... When you play every game with a feeders, ark, or otherwise dumbs on your team like me then you'll know why people troll. YOU MAKE THE GME UNENJOYABLE FIRST YOU CAUSE IT FEEDING PIECE OF SHIT

IMO, why I think people like to troll:

  1. He wants to test out the Intentional feeding/Toxicity Bans

  2. Too much lifeless freetime, so why not screw this match?

  3. "Chill, it's just normals"

  4. "I don't have support champion sorry, gonna go Yasuo supp", during a free week Taric &Morgana

I've never, ever bothered to troll in a game

Unless you count strange item builds in ARAMs. But I legitimately TRY to win with those strange builds and I'm just trying to have fun, so I don't consider that trolling.

There is some dark satisfaction to it. I don't troll, but i have trolled before, and it is quite funny watching everything your team planned go to bunk. I guess it's like dark humor, most people find it unenjoyable, but others love it.

Hello, I am a former troll who has since reformed most of that behavior, occasionally I still let some slip but 95% of the time I am a very non toxic player these days. The reasons for trolling vary. Some trolls are just trolls who will troll simply because they are not decent human beings, this is true. Against those trolls, there really isn't a good defense other than to report them.

However, there is another group of trolls that aren't just out to ruin games. These are people who get upset when certain things happen in game, more specifically, a breakdown in teamwork or a lack thereof. I'll give an example: Jungler heads to gank bot lane. Someone at bot lane messes up (doesn't matter who in this scenario) and your team feeds a doublekill. To make matters worse, now one of the people who didn't screw up at bot lane is now trolling/ on tilt. Usually in these circumstances (and they do happen very often) the player who is upset and feeling like trolling is simply looking for a "sorry guys my bad" or something along these lines from the person who screwed up. Sadly, in this community, people never own up to their mistakes and instead go around blaming one another even when it is their fault. This creates an atmosphere where it makes more sense to troll your teammates rather than find out what went wrong and fix it or try something else.

My advise to anyone who is looking to avoid trolling is as follows:

  1. Try not to criticize other players, even when they make a mistake. It is one thing for a player to come out and say "sorry guys I messed up". It is another for someone else to blame it on them even if it is their fault. The reasons you should admit to your mistakes and also not call others our for them are the same: Teamwork. If you are criticizing other players and not admitting your own faults, your teamwork will suffer/not exsist. Everyone including myself falls into one of these categories, or both. Try your best to identify your mistakes, keep an open mind, and forgive others for their mistakes, especially if they know they are making them.

  2. Don't be childish, or an asshole. Many people create situations where the other person feels inclined to troll. Example: Someone picks a champion who is outside the meta, or plays them outside the meta and another person on the team throws a rage fit and from that moment on is negative and abusive. Both players are partially to blame, but it is the rager who creates the atmosphere where the other party wants to troll them by being a total prick. The solution to this is simple, discourage assholes and don't be one yourself, and if you are going to pick outside the meta, be prepared for others to do the same and still be able to work together to win.

  3. If you die, wait 10-15 seconds before you begin typing to your team. When you do, try to keep your comments positive and suggest that you try something else, or ask for help with a certain champion etc etc.

  4. Do simple things to improve team cohesion. Play fill. If you highlight a certain champion, and someone asks you not to play them, sometimes it is better to play another champion that you are also good at and avoid the champion they dont like. Maybe it is just that they dont play well with that champion and are trying to help you win by letting you know they would rather that you not play them. This kinda goes under not being an asshole too.

Not a troll, but i get same issue, last game was 5v3, 2 people rage quit. One quit after his first death, the other quit because we were 4v5 at about 8 mins into the game. Just outta spite i got fed and made the game last 45 mins just incase they were planning on returning to play a new game. Trolls are either bad at the game, have emotional problems(which to a degree is understandable depending on their life) but please dont bring it into my down time, or many are just bored or get kicks out of it.

Lets clarify, there are various degrees of "troll":

  1. The "I want to play this champ this way" troll. Some people consider this breaking the meta, some consider it trolling, and to be honest, it depends on the player and the build. These players get their kicks off of playing their champion in rediculus ways, but are trying to help the team win. Usually people only complain about these players at the begining of the game and when their team loses. An example that I'm aware of is Siv HD (see his Youtube videos)

  2. The "I'm mad and you should be too" troll. These players just want to yell at everyone and anyone, thinking that somehow that will make them feel better. This may stem from real world issues or from percieved team faults. They're looking for a battle of words, and will likely have more APM dedicated to typing than playing the game. Usually the only way to get them to shut up is to prove that you know what you're doing, but even that doesn't work for some. The mute button is your best weapon for enjoying the game. These players will not be playing their best, but they will usually be trying for the sake fo preserving their percieved superiority.

  3. The "I want to intentionally make it harder for my team to win" troll. This is the most serious type of troll. These players get their satisfaction from watching you fight against all odds. It's likely that most of these trolls only do this kind of behavior on a smurf acount, ensuring they have nothing to lose. This is the most frustrating to other players, and the hardest to actually punish. I'm unsure what the best counter to this is.

Note that these assessments are all based off of my observation as a normal player, not as a troll (although I might be guilty of Type 1).
