Hi! I'm kinda new, and have some questions

Hello all, I'm a halfway new player(been playing for a week), and I have some questions if anybody would be kind and answer them for me.

  1. To start off with, is there a resource somewhere to explain what all the acronyms mean? I'm not new to video games, but I'm new to this style of video games. And when people say things like "Elo" or "ARAM" it really throws me for a loop

2: I've yet to play ranked yet, but i've been told to wait till I was level 15. Was there a specific reason for this (I understand masteries are a big part of it)

3: What day do the new champions come in on? As in the rotation

4: I understand that this game has a very toxic community. Is this true or just a falsehood that spreads around. All the games I've been in with Co-op VS bots everyone was nice and polite.

5: I understand the honour system, but I keep hearing people ask me if I have gotten any rewards for it. I don't know if there is a specific threshold for this or whathaveyou, but I'm currently at 7friendly 2helpful 14teamwork and 4 honourable opponent.

6: Final one, I swear. The level cap is 30 correct?

  1. Elo is literally just that, ELO. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system That link should explain it better than I will try to. Is just a sort of ranking system that while used with LoL shouldn't be as it is supposed to be forliteral solo ranking but is applied to solo queue Ranked in LoL which relies on a team so it is rather flawed.

ARAM stands for All Random All Mid which is what people used to do, start a custom game, everyone clicks random, everyone went mid, then moved to the one lane map, then eventually Riot picked it up as an actual game mode used on Howling abyss where the game randomly picks your champion and you all go down "mid" which is essentially a one lane map.

Anything else I'm not sure without knowing which you are referring to. ask and I'll answer.

  1. As the person above said, you need to be level 30 and you have to have I believe 15 champions minimum to play it. I wouldn't suggest it until you are actually comfortable as the skill difference can vary from Normals (non-ranked Summoner's rift, as all Ranked solo queue is done on Summoner's Rift).

  2. The new champion Rotations are done on Tuesday but there are some exceptions such as patches that don't fall on a Tuesday but that is rare on both cases.

  3. the person above is exaggerating and most that say that are exaggerating because they are angry or someone acted like a jerk in a game they just played. I have been playing LoL since 2011 and I can say that this community is no better or worse than most other gaming communities. Some people get frustrated in Ranked games because it gets much more competitive and will lash out but it isn't as if everyone does, more like 1 out of 100 act like a tool.

Don't stress it and just have fun. Most times if you act like a jerk you will be treated like a jerk but if you act like a chill nice person the same is returned.

5)The Reward so to speak for the honor system is getting honored so many times in so many games you receive a Ribbon. The person above is slightly misinformed saying the Ribbons were season 3 but they still are given, they just raised the amount you need within a certain amount of games because people were abusing the system (oddly enough :s) with friends to spam honor in custom games and the like.

I don't know the amount and Riot has never said an exact amount so just be chill and if you think you should be honored don't be afraid to ask, worse that happens is someone says no or just doesn't do it. It is nothing special but it gives a different colored ribbon on the corner of your champion splash art when you are in the loading screen after champ select.

  1. Yup, level cap is 30

Ask anything else if you have questions. Not everyone is patient enough to answer but we've all been a "noob" at this game.

  1. Elo: Your skill level. You can be Silver but have the same elo (MMR) as a gold. ARAM: all random all mid
  2. You have to be lvl 30 to play ranked. You want to wait so you get better and have more skill.
  3. I forget either Monday or Tuesday.
  4. The LOL community is shit. Everyone is toxic and that will never change.
  5. No you will not get any rewards for the honor system. You used to get banners but that's season 3 they did it.
  6. Yes

Welcome to the slaughterhouse, Ulltima! I just wanted to add a couple points to Xonra's excellent reply.

  1. League Wikia is a decent resource for terminology, some of which can get really confusing. I've been playing since June 2012 and I still have to visit it sometimes myself. I also use MobaFire for information on Champions (particularly ability timers, cooldowns, etc.), but bear in mind that LoL is in constant flux due to balance changes and sometimes MobaFire is a little slow getting their information updated.

  2. The current season is nearing its close, so ranked won't be an option for you until the next one starts (sometime in January usually, if I'm not mistaken. If I am someone please correct me) unless you grind hard over the next week or so. Also some free advice regarding entering ranked play: ensure you have a comprehensive rune collection and have a good bit of experience in Summoner's Rift and the roles before you start playing ranked matches. I would also advise you not to buy any runes below Tier 3, which you can start to purchase at level 20, as anything below this becomes completely obsolete and a waste of IP once you do hit 20.

  3. Just another tidbit, the Free Champion Rotation doesn't follow any distinct order or pattern as far as which champions are selected is concerned. Several champions have been known to make multiple appearances (such as Caitlyn and Ashe) due to their accessibility to new players, but others rarely make the list.

  4. Bot matches tend to draw a very different crowd. The atmosphere is generally much more laid back and casual, while in PVP matches things are considerably more competitive and aggressive. Is the league community toxic? Particular demographics within the community certainly fit the bill, but by and large the playerbase is improving and, in it's current state (and reserved for my personal experience only) things aren't nearly as bad as many people outside the community say it is. Unfortunately there will always be trolls, but if you don't feed them then you'll be beyond their touch.

  5. There are no hard and fast thresholds for receiving the crests, aka ribbons. Each player's vote has a certain weight when determining how much it impacts your progress to a crest based on several criteria including (but not limited to) how often he votes, how often he votes for you specifically, and his status in the correctional systems. Also, once a crest is achieved you must maintain a certain level of nominations to keep it.

Glad to have you in the game with us, friend.

  1. You will learn it naturally, don't worry. Or try googling it like I do, or ask around at Boards.

  2. I'm pretty sure most people at level 15 hasn't know the full system about League yet, such as learning all the champ's moves & countering certain champs. It's best recommended to start ranks at level 30 to avoid pairing with idiots.

  3. On my time, rotation changes every Tuesday, but about what time I dunno. I don't literally live in NA, so ask others, sorry :p

  4. Co-Op vs Ai means nothing at all. When it comes to playing against real people, that's the tough part. In normal games, your enemy is way smarter than what you always fight against in bots game. They know your champ, they know your weaknesses, and they know how to ward. They can most of the time turn tides against you, even when it seems you're winning. People flame and being toxic is because they really want to get better and tries to win almost every single normal games, and they hate it when his own teammates is holding him back by feeding & afk.

  5. I already have 300 of teammates honors, but I have yet received any ribbons at all. This I dunno as well.

  6. Yes.

  1. probably, but that's just referring to basically rank in ranked and a gamemode where you play a random champion, respectivly
  2. You can only play ranked at 30 with enough champions for draft(15?).
  3. Monday? I don't pay much attention anymore.
  4. Yes the community is toxic but it's not bad at all...until you're in ranked. then about 30-50% of your games will involve a player who struggles with politeness, to put it mildly.
  5. I don't know what you have to reach to get rewarded.
  6. correct.
