Earning/Playing games for Rewards (icons) for Special Events

Riot, I would like to ask why are you requiring us to buy keys to purchase to open boxes? What happened to days where we had to play a certain amount of games to receive icons for free? I understand we can play to earn key parts, but those are really really hard to earn or very very rarely earned.

I really enjoyed how we were given the opportunity to play and earn rewards without even having to worry about keys or boxes. I guess the keys and boxes just don't do it for me because the keys/key fragments are very very hard to get.

I was really looking forward to the icons but once I saw how I must receive them, I have to get keys and boxes. Ugh, that is a very big barrier. Now I don't even look forward to keys and boxes and essences.

I do miss how you guys would award us when you first came into existence. I really like that only thing we can buy are skins and champions. That was neat. I really liked how the icons and the wards skins were just a plus and we can get them by just playing. It was neat.
