GIFs are a glorious part of the internet. But before we could have badass Breaking Bad gifs, marvelous Monty Python gifs, or classical cat gifs, we needed gifs to be created in the first place. The Graphical Interchange Format was invented in 1987 by Steve Wilhite, an engineer for CompuServe. Two years later a new type of gif, nicknamed the 89a, that allowed for transparent backgrounds, storage of application-specific metadata, and most importantly, ANIMATION!

So what was the first animated gif you ask? Well wonder no longer! Behold, the first animated gif ever created! http://i.imgur.com/HhY4whh.gif

P.S. It is pronounced with a soft G sound (Jiff), not a hard G sound. This was confirmed by the creator of the gif himself.
