It's based off of an old inferior design, but I'm pretty sure the "power" he's putting into swings is just the character.
Every swing in his duels was filled with anger and was aimed to kill.

The unstable blade reflects Kylo's unstable force connection and pull between the dark side and the light side. Maybe that's not really what it was intended to do but it's a cool subtle addition if it wasn't intended.

Most Jedi that have showed up in movies so far imitate either renaissance duelists or feudal Japanese Samurai in their general style, emphasizing elaborate swordsmanship and precision, while Kylo Ren's combat style and weapon both reflect a more brutal style like early medieval knights using broadswords. It's a lot less elegant, but just as dangerous, while also providing a lot more protection from the bane of the Star Wars franchise: severed hands. That's why he looks like he's flailing around hacking everywhere, because to put it bluntly, he is. It's actually a surprisingly efficient tactic when the majority of his enemies aren't trained at his skill level, just like European knights would use brute strength and superior gear when fighting armies of peasants.

That sums up the fighting style of the duel in this fight, and I fucking love it.
It's a Dark Jedi fighting against two people who don't follow the Jedi code so every swing is vicious and aimed to kill, which is how a sword fight in this kind of setting should be.
I definitely loved all the prequel and original trilogy lightsaber fights, but a lot of the swings and techniques look too smooth and generally aimed to disarm or hurt someone..not even close to the Episode VII fight.
T RexHasTinyArms5 votesIf you think about it though it makes sense given that the sabers don't have weight. The styles that are more "graceful" are generally designed for use with more slender blades that rely on thrusts or precision slices rather than brute force. Most brute force sword fights (knights or Scottish highlands w/ claymores or something) use the weight of the blade as part of the style to generate more force and powerful blows. W/out weight to the weapon, these styles would actually be more difficult to use effectively (although it was an awesome addition to this movie and makes sense to see from a dark jedi who might gain more strength through an emotional and anger fueled fighting style rather than focusing on technique). One of the few gripes I had about this movie was non force users being able to wield a light saber w/ much effectiveness bc in other places it has been mentioned that Jedi have to train or use the force connection to rely on intuition in order to handle a blade w/ no weight and yet function as if they can feel the blade (which would be very unintuitive to fight w/ a 4-8 foot weapon [double blade staff for 8 ft] that had a balance of a 6-12 inch hilt as the only thing that exists).

T RexHasTinyArms3 votesIt also makes a lot of sense given that Jedi are supposed to build their light sabers (or occasionally inherit one w/ special meaning) and that light sabers are often meant to be indicative or reflective of the master. Depending on the construction they have different attributes (ie the double light saber staff, or different colors), and the unstable nature of the beam might be a crystal that is of unstable power or reflects the discord and conflict in Kylo's connection to the force through the struggle he has between his pull to the light side through the influence of his parents, and the pull to the dark side through the influence of his master and other influences (tried to keep that as spoiler free as possible).

Technically its an old lightsaber of the Ren Knights, its "unstable" so it needs exhaust ports so itll stay to a true stable blade, otherwise it would look like a fountain gushing out all over the place.

Well, he is, hes untrained. He only has his hatred fueling him into the darkside, thats why at the end the "supreme leader" says " Bring him to me, its time to complete his training".
And if they go off the old movies, it will have a HUGE time gap from this movie, to the next one. So he will for sure be more powerful, in the ways of the force, and swordskill.

And I assume you've seen them Jedi moves... no way they chop off their hands with it, and it will stop lightsabers from cutting off your arms like pretty much 20 other people just in the Star Wars universe we know of have had done to them, lol.

There were plenty of scenes where they got their hands chopped off without being disarmed. Like the scene with Anakin, for instance, Obiwan jumped off the ledge and chopped off his hands even with plenty of time for Anakin to get ready.

Lmao, "don't make a fool of yourself." You're the one being such a nerd that you can describe the scenes in thorough, in-depth detail. Seriously though, there's like 10+ scenes just in the original movies like that, let alone plots in comics where they get their hands cut off. I doubt the crossguard wouldn't help at all, and even if it didn't, it looks badass and if he's not a total shitter at being a Jedi/Sith/Whatever he is(I heard he was inbetween...), he won't even come close to cutting off his own limbs.
