Who do you find Ryze easiest to play against or "counter" ?

Yasuo, and Illaoi. Yasuo is a hard one to explain. I guess it's because your damage output is so god damn high that his sustain just isn't enough to all-in on you. As for illaoi... Illaoi is basically free gold. She can only really kill you if she ults and hits you with all her tentacles. It's basically play safe and farm her passive until you hit level 6, then you can go all in and kill her multiple times. But my third close choice is definitely Irelia. She didn't make my easiest because while I can melt her like paper if she has lower HP she can stun you and if you get stunned in your Arcane Mastery you're done for in the fight.

So you find it easy to play vs irelia? I have always found her a problem with other top laners so I could give Ryze a try.

How do you feel about ryze vs fizz? I feel like Ryze used to be thought of as a counter to fizz (might still be). My opinion has grown that its a skill match up between players. Your thoughts?

Fizz is a very easy champion to do damage with. Ryze is good against him for his snare that he can't do his hop out of, so you get definite damage on him. Problem? Fizz does more damage than you, can do his damage safely, and has a better early game. So if you can avoid putting him ahead, you can beat him, but if he gets a lead, you will need to outplay him by kiting some of his damage away or get a jungler to help.

Just play passive and farm and avoid his all-ins and you can do really well.

The most important thing to remember is if he uses his hop you can go all-in on him and get a kill easily later on.

Be honest here. How would you rate Ryze's skillcap compared to the more popular "playmaker" champions like Zed, Vayne, etc? On one hand I see people claiming Ryze is literally just brainless faceroll, on the other I see Faker saying everyone should take time to learn how to play Ryze.

Ryze is quite hard to play, but he's the easiest to consecutively do well as once you get the hang of him. So the initial skillcap is where it hurts. Timing Arcane Mastery is serious business.

Or I guess really, it's not that he's hard to play. It's more that he takes a lot of finesse to play well.
