It's really great on tanks (cinderhulk really makes up for the item slot. It doesn't feel any different, tbh), and some bruisers like Vi synergize with it decently.
And let's be real here, Fish. People have trouble spending 75 gold on a single ward, let alone 250 for the most broken vision item in the game. Sinking 800 gold early just doesn't occur to some people. :c
But hey, it really helps counter counterjunglers.

There's a pretty significant difference between Bronze and even Silver, much less Bronze than Gold and above.

To start, despite Bronze being worse than each ELO in every other metric, they have the most gold earned on average per game - implying that Bronzes are, by comparison, worse at closing out games than every ELO above them. It also indicates that despite the loss of goldflow from CS, Bronzes tend to die for no reason more often, resulting in higher average gold gains. That's already significantly more than just "more CS per minute".
Then there's the CS chart, with a predictable pattern of CS increasing as the higher the ELO goes, with the exception of challenger. Nothing to say here.
Bronze also has the lowest wardage by a pretty significant margin. Contrary to what this particular thread would seem to indicate, Bronze players are easily the worst at warding. Perhaps this particular Platinum player wasn't having a good game and was heavily tilting (or, perhaps, was boosted, although I think that's unlikely), but he probably, on average, wards more than a Bronze player. In fact, even 5 wards per game is more than your average Bronze player, with the exception of possibly Bronze supports, who simply do so because it's expected of them.
Bronzes also have the lowest KDA ratio on average. Nothing further to explain here. They die too much for the wrong reasons and don't do a good job of maintaining kill leads.
In short, the difference between Bronze and higher tiers is much more than just CS. They're worse at closing out games, they're worse at CSing, they don't ward properly, and they have lower KDAs.

And the observation that the biggest difference between Bronze and Gold is CS is based off of personal experience.

Randomonium3 votesIf we have a team fight over dragon and I can consistently beat a plat or diamond jungler to a smite then that's a win for me. Even if you have vision control any good team will have dragon timers down and be ready to contest.

I understand it happens quite often regardless of the call, but there is almost always a better time to do dragon if you are constantly fighting for it. And if they want it later in the game, give it to them! Go have your team take baron for a huge trade and the game most likely.
Lets also not forget, its not hard to out smite, we all know how much damage smite does, it is just who has that split-second reaction, which is not exclusive to platinum/diamond players. The amount of times you lose the smite battle in plat is probably close to or exactly the same in silver.
Randomonium2 votesWhat I'm saying is that more often then not both teams have dragon timers because even if you don't have vision you can still hear when dragon dies and just make a note of the time and add 6 minutes so you're ready to contest the next one.
Then the battle becomes who can establish vision control and control movement through the choke points around dragon. Many times I see a team start dragon even though my team is there to contest. It's quite easy to let dragon poke them down and then engage when dragon is low health to not only smite steal but also engage in a favorable team fight since the enemy team is lower health.
There's so much more to the smite battle than just split second reactions. If you rely on just that then yeah that doesn't require much skill. The smite battle is really won on how you use your CC and when you decide to burst dagon into smite range. Never mind the fact that you're also fighting a team fight at the same time and trying to zone for your allies and inflict maximum damage on the enemy team.
I love those kind of battles. Its not about split second reaction times, its about your ability to multitask and process large amounts of information quickly to determine the best moment to unleash your burst or lay down your CC.

As for that Platinum guy, I think this paraphrase from Stonewall008 (one of his S3-S4 videos has the full concept) sums up his case nicely: Most long term Platinum players are Diamond/Challenger (spoken before Master existed) tier players with a serious communication/emotional flaw that keeps them down low when their skill level is up around the professional mark. Such, you will find many angry Platinum players who know they are better, yet are chained down, and often take their anger out on other Platinum players. Platinum is the worst elo to be in.
